Craig and Foley resigned under withering criticism from both the Left and the Right. The Left, which joyously promotes homosexuality and defends so-called "gay rights," beat the drum against Craig and Foley only for political advantage. Instead of smartly hosing the Left by casting its criticism of Craig as "homophobia," the Right instead piled on him, amplifying the Left's meme; "The Republican Culture of Corruption!" That stupid move likely cost Republicans the 2006 Congressional--a key event leading to where we are today. Republicans zealously helped get rid of Craig, but look at the overall cost to the Republican Party and the implementation of its generally conservative agendas.
An interesting question is: In "Sanford" or "Craig" moments, what is best for rightwingers to do for America? Should we help promote the inherent morality of our beliefs by attacking rightwingers at the expense of handing our leftist enemies political advantage? Or should we instead privately deal with and discipline our wayward sons?
There are plenty of morally indignant conservatives and Republicans; those who stayed home or voted for 0bama on election night last year to punish the Republican Party, who, in my opinion, answered that question incorrectly. Is our assistance in the public destruction of someone basically in our ideological camp, worth the price to our nation? If we want to blunt the Left's attacks when a rightwing politician screws up in his personal life, we should study its successful tactics in defending Barney Frank and Gary Studds--two truly loathesome dirtbags who did worse than Sanford did. And we should heed the advice of Ronald Reagan who advised we should not publicly criticize or publicly brawl with those in our camp.
And yeah, Sanford is an absolute nitwit for feeding the fire by going "live" with his adolescent, pathetic confession and sappy, public declaration of "love." In that sense he brought much of the heat down on himself. Idiot. Didn't anyone in the RNC advise him to just clam up and let things die down?
Actually, I think the proper word would be narcissist. He was so worried about "me, me, me" that he had no clue what he even sounded like to others.

Eating our own I hate it. This shouldn’t even be an issue Billy Jean settled this. You are allowed to have a mistress and lie about it. Politically, not morally. That’s between him and God.
If any one wants to jump up with that “you are your brothers keeper” garbage I’ll be happy to hit them with a stick.
Plenty of folks have fallen and remade themselves, but this guy just seems like a narcissist through and through. Every time he gets in front of the cameras, he makes an ass of himself and he doesn't even realize it.
Get him some psyche help then. I really don’t care about his personal life. This ain’t checkers this is chess. IF he helps our cause he is in. Whine to your wife (not meant to you personally). The democrats HAVE NO MORALS. They have no leg to stand on in this thing. Social conservatives that echo their line just hurt our cause. No one is perfect.
That's because they can stand up and yell "HYPOCRITE" every time one of our supposedly God-fearing, family values man or woman acts like the hypocrite they are.
Call Barney Frank to the floor and make him yell it every time. Call the czar of fisting in elementary schools to yell it. Call the czar of the IRS that cheated on his taxes. Let them yell hypocrite. It will sound all the more stupid. Maybee some one will wake up.

There are lots of scumbags in political office these days.
Mark Sanford is far less harmful to the political system than the majority of them.
