I think he was setting her up for something. If you notice he keeps saying after each exchange with her "we will get into this a little more later". This was kinda like a marinade and now she knows there are some hot coals waiting but she does not know from what direction the skewer will come. It even could be a skewer that Graham did not place next to the coals.
