The tree controversy gives some insight into the Nazis' apparent fascination with trees, perhaps because of the ancient rituals of teutonic tree worship.

I still remember when my late father visited the Redwood Forest in CA, saying that he felt he was in Heaven. Of course he was running board footage numbers in his head at the time...He was the head sawyer at a sawmill in Upper Michigan.

Why punish the tree and the critters that live in it?

While we’re at it lets burn all the history books that make mention of terrible people and the atrocities that they commited. We only want to remember the nice things. (sarc)

Worship of the Earth, sounds familiar don’t it?

Tree worship and other odd rituals are still active in farflung portions of Poland, Austria and Germany. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sixth_and_Seventh_Books_of_Moses

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The tree was NOT planted so we wouldn’t forget the evil things Hitler did.

The tree was planted as a memorial TO HONOR Hitler and the things he did. Leaving it standing is like leaving a statue of Hitler standing in the middle of town.

It should be cut down.

‘It should be cut down.’

And burned? No, too big of a carbon footprint there...maybe a nice ducking stool or a set of water boards...Nah, after its cut down it will just be so much wood and no longer a reminder of evil unless some enterprizing racist wants to sell special crosses to burn.

True about the Catholics.

I saw archival footage of folks entering a death camp and was surprised to see a nun shepherding litte (I assume jewish) children, attempting to keep them calm. She was wearing a habit that looked like The Flying Nun's, with the hat with enormous wings on it.

It was only a few seconds of footage but it haunts me to this day.

Just re-name it. Should we kill all Germans who were named “Adolf”?

I’ve seen that photo also and I believe you are correct, they were Jewish children. I wonder if that was the woman named Stein who converted.

It did not necessarily need to be a jew who converted. Many Christians of all stripes were murdered by the Nazis who were, in the value system of the Nazis “racially pure”, but politically impure.

I couldn’t find that picture while searching Stein so it might have been as you indicate another nun.

Not exactly. Some Jews, minority of course, were Catholics as well. They were also treated by Germans like Jews of Judaic faith as Germans didn't distinguish between religions. Edith Stein, a Catholic nun of Jewish origin who was murdered in a death camp and then years after called saint by the Pope, could be a good example for that.
