Offensive to many Japanese too, to imply that the divine emperor would deign to ‘come down’ to a mere warrior to sign a surrender agreement.

I was thinking that too. Even if Obama didn't know the exact facts, a basic knowledge of Japanese culture should eliminate the thought of Hirohito signing.

Hirohito was a relatively young man who was sequestered into the Imperial Palace and fed lies by his Generals. MacArthur, realizing the importance of the emperor, was very careful in ordering the U.S. military not to bomb the Palace Grounds or even strategic targets too close to the Grounds lest an errant bomb go astray. This is why most of Tokyo's central railroad station survived the war intact even as much of the remainder of the city was turned to rubble.

Interestingly, it was the Emperor himself who figured out he was being fed lies and finally pulled rank and ordered the surrender. Fanatics, particularly in the army, almost pulled off a coup August 14-15, 1945 to prevent it from happening.

Japan's Longest Day, a fascinating 1967 account of the incident by Japan's award winning film director Kihachi Okamoto, is well worth viewing for anyone interested. The black and white movie, 2 hour 38 minute length and English subtitling turns off the typical Hollyweird crowd, but is a must-see for real students of history.

The think you really have to admire about Okamoto is the efforts he went through to get the facts accurate, sometimes at the expense of entertainment and filling theater seats.

“I’m always worried about using the word ‘victory’...”

. . . except when it comes to his own increasingly likely illegitimate election.

Someone needs to send Obama a copy of that famous photo(s) on the USS Missouri.

"Hirohito's the guy in the top hat, right?"

Make sure you include a proper caption.

Obama is incensed at the notion of a national leader being forced to renounce his divinity.

I don't think Hirohito was there:

USS Missouri photos

The fourth photo (color) has good captions. No mention of Hirohito.

The Japanese murdered more Chinese in retaliation for the Doolittle raid than the number of Americans killed in World War II in total.

At least McCain would have known that - because his Grandfather was standing next to MacArthur at the time!

It was long thought that Japan's Minister of Foreign Affairs Mamoru Shigemitsu signed on behalf of the emperor. We were in error.

The One has now corrected our collective memory. It was, in fact, Hirohito.

Move along now, folks. Nothing to see here. Just another liberal showing how the only thing worse to the Left than a war is winning the war.

What was in quotes was what Obama would say upon seeing the photo. You know him, he has to make the “facts” fit his preconceived conclusions. The Savior said Hirohito was there, so he was. Any mistake is on our part.

Are you trying to say it is US’s fault that Japanese killed more Chinese?

Japanese has been killing Chinese since 1938 long before Pearl Harbor. They annexed three northern provinces in China. After that they further took Shanghai, NanKing etc. With or without US help, the Chinese people will fight it till there is nobody left. With or without US retaliation, the Japanese imperial army will continue to kill and enslave Chinese people.

How is it possible that US and China relationship could be normalized in 1970s with Nixon’s visit? Is it because US helped China defeating the Japanese, that majority of Chinese people have no ill feelings about America even after nearly 30 years of left wing properganda. Most Chinese like Americans more than they like Russians even though Russia was a communist country. The reason is America helped and gave, Russians only took.

For those of you who do not understand China, you may want to know the left have been streamrolled since 1978. The left in China made a mess of the country, completely destroyed the economy and education system. When Mao died in 1978, they are over! Deng Xiao Ping was jailed by Mao as a right wing revolutionist. When Mao died, Deng started reform. Right now Chinese governments are consists of right wing technocrats.

I am explicitly not saying that is was the U.S. fault. I was just trying to give some impression of the brutality and evil of the people we were fighting.

The only reasons the Islamists haven’t slaughtered more people is lack of competence, not lack of intent.
