This is his Bush moment. Except Bush had the sane percentage of the population who WANTED desperately to support him. Obama has the insane portion as his base. Anything seemingly rational he may want to do, if at all there is anything, will be viewed by them as defection and turning his back on the dream of living in East Germany circa 1955ish. He’s in a tough spot. I like it.
