That "select group" is only about 300 million Americans. Besides this guy's inability to reason, he's a lousy writer. I re-wrote the paragraph below.
"Another component is a strange combination of loneliness and community, where a person thinks they are part of a select group that is under attack. That's not extraordinary since it happens all the time in various situations. It gets dangerous, however, when the paranoia is fed by derangement."

Actually, a figure of 52,000 is closer to what most liberal talk show hosts get. But that is only because the right wing media keeps them down and does not let progressives listen to their shows. This was inherited from the previous administration and will take a while longer than expected to fix. We found that Cheney had his claws in the radio industry a lot deeper than we thought. As well Karl Rove was operating behind the scenes doing dirty tricks like feeding double strength drinks to Randi Rhodes (without telling her) just before she went on the air. And George Bush was threatening to use CIA assassins to torture Ed Schultz by blowing cigar smoke in his face.
To summarize the preceding paragraph - THOSE D**** REPUBLICANS!
He is trying to justify the soon to be seen extreme measures which the affirmative action fascists will engage in. Like this writer they will bungle it and it will backfire, let’s hope soon.

It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!
