In Defense of Animals (IDA) the organization that has worked for two years to rescue three circus elephants named Tina, Jewel and Queenie, announced today that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has filed formal charges against the elephants' handler, Wilbur Davenport (dba "Maximus tons of Fun") for multiple violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA).
The charges state that the gravity of the violations alleged
is great and that Davenport has not shown good faith in his repeated unwillingness to comply with the AWA and its regulations and standards.

If you’ve ever seen how elephants and other animals are trained for a circus...you’ll never go near one again. It’s inherently cruel and in my opinion should be banned. Bears and elephants aren’t meant to dance and do tricks.

I agree. I absolutely love elephants. If I were a self-indulgent dolt like that guy, I’d probably have some myself. But I know a whole lot better than that.
Short of that, I indulge my pachy-love by populating my large landscape with huge, nearly life-sized, rusted metal elephant sculptures. They’re awesome. And they make me smile every day.

I saw a video of a young captured elephant being broken to be a work elephant by a gang of Thais (IIRC). They beat him and beat him while he raged. Can't remember how long it took - many hours, perhaps several days - but he finally succumbed, completely broken and zombie-like. Disgusting.
Don't know how they do it for circuses, but it has to be bad however whatever the method.

...I visited one of those elephant camps once in Thailand. It's very sad to see the babies chained up alone and displaying the classic severe stress signs of repetitive body swaying or bobbing of the head; I left quickly and sadly. These are some of the hooks they use to dig in and force obedience:
It's very cruel.

bump to banning circuses. No “entertainment” is worth the abuse the animals endure.
