Have you ever heard about a woman named Mary Dyer? She was condemned by the Puritans in 1660s for her Quaker beliefs. The Puritans believed in religious freedom for themselves (and, I guess, some other Calvinists). But they didn’t hesitate to persecute those who wandered off of the Calvinist reservation. That said, it would be wrong to judge them by today’s standards. The entire Western world was involved in religious struggles of various kinds, and they were merely acting like everyone else did at the time.
