Has the trend in the USA been towards more freedom or less? Has the national government tended to grant itself more power or less? Have the courts tended to interpret the Constitution with more restraint or less? Has the national government tended to get more involved or less involved?

And just think, before the Constitution, there was no national gubmint. Just a Continental Congress with extremely limited power. Go read the articles of confederation and ponder what we gave up. And for what?
