At 12:30 Donna Jackson woke up to her dog barking like someone was in her backyard. She went to to her backdoor and sure enough she was face to face with a man trying to break in.
Oh hes getting ready to break the window, said Jackson to the dispatcher.
Jackson immediately went and got her shotgun, hoping an officer would get there so she didnt have to use it.
But the man trying to break in had other plans, he then grabbed some patio furniture and broke the back door.
Dear god hurry. I havent shot yet. Hurry, said Jackson.
Can you get oh my god. Maam, do you have a cordless phone, said the dispatcher.
I shot him, said Jackson.
Jackson shot Billy Dean Riley right in the chest, killing him instantly.
The shooting is being investigated as a homicide but the sheriff says Jackson did what she had to do.
This was nothing more than a home invasion and Mrs. Jackson was defending herself, said Lincoln County Sheriff Charles Mangion.

Heres the loooooong 911 call that was released to the public:

I guess this guy was one of those rogue ACORN census employees.
I don't think I would have had her restraint. When every one of those seconds and minutes seemed like an eternity, she showed calm and patience (compared to what my reaction would be).
I think I would've just gotten it over with..probably after the first three minutes. I just don't think my ticker could sustain an adrenaline rush that long.
She was definitely good throughout—assertive with the 911 person too. Not rude, but assertive. Call me a fan.
A shotgun blast to the chest can ruin your day.
Half hour call, well I’ll have to listen later, wonder what would’ve happnened to her if she didn’t have a shotgun. In some places I think it’s illegal to own one.
Definitely listen to it. Of course, we’ll never know what could have happened. It could have been a case of some drunk guy at the wrong house but obviously he had a record from the photo. It would be interesting to know what his record was to get some clues. Sorry for the victim that she was put in that position, but glad she was so smart and relatively calm about it. She was emotional at the end understandably, but considering everything she handled the whole thing very well. What a gal!

GOD BLESS YOU DONNA, BTW, no need to ask God for forgiveness.. you were doing His work.. Not only were the angels... (and the shotgun) there to protect you... in fact all the angels in heaven were REJOICING as you carried out the Lord’s work !!

I read and listened to the story...now I know why I got rid of the guns...I could never have pulled the trigger...I guess I could run away or lock doors etc, but I couldn’t do it.
Good for her!
what choice did she have...from what i hear break ins while people are at home are on the rise...better be prepared.
