Christmas is very near so that means a lot of people are very busy with doing their shopping especially now that large retailers, like Target.com, Amazon.com, along with Walmart, increased discounts on legions of items. These increased discounts may have boosted recent sales compared to last year, but not necessarily profits. Each dollar you give away as a discount chips at the profit margin - obviously. Retail success is about profit, not sales - you can sell a lot of widgets, but if you lose money, you still lose money. A naturally occurring phenomenon may be the growing interrelationship between on-line and in-store sales. The buying season might be spreading beyond Black Friday because of online retail.
