Muhammad was a warrior; he led men to battle. Jihad was integral to this expansion; it provided a rationale for the Islamic Imperium. In a post 9/11 interview, Samuel Haq, a Pakistani cleric, explained the pillars of Islam and said the following: “Jihad must be fought without limits. There is no compromise in jihad...Jihad against the oppressor of Muslims is an absolute duty. Islam is a religion that defends itself.”

Why are these simple truths so hard for people to understand?
