He was very polite in his critique of Rummy's "smaller and faster" model of invasion and occupation. The surge proved that wrong. Diplomats and the State Dept. were the cheerleaders for what nearly caused us to lose in Iraq. I'm glad DR and GWB saw what needed to be done in the end.

Hunter does not put others down to make himself look wiser than they are. He’s, like you said, a statesman. And it was Hunter who stood in the way of Bush and Rummy trying to further downsize the Army. Hunter finally forced them to increase the size of both the Army and Marine Corps.
