UPS' hybrid-electric vans reduce fuel use by 29%, cost per mile by 15%

UPS and its competitors at FedEx and DHL have all been testing a variety of hybrid drive delivery vans for several years now. Recently, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory completed a twelve-month evaluation of six hybrid vans being used by UPS in the Phoenix, Arizona area and the results were good. Very good, in fact. After twelve months of operation, the hybrid vans averaged 28.9 percent lower fuel consumption than similar conventional diesel vans. Even with the extra cost of the hybrid vehicles, the overall cost per mile was cut by 15 percent.

Good for them.. my city Bus line has cancelled their HYBRID bus purchases as they caused costs to INCREASE!!!

In a free market economy the companies can buy whatever the heck kinda delivery vans they want.

If they can handle the speeds and the abuse that UPS drivers seem to expect, more power to ‘em.

I just hope there are no subsidies hidden in this deal.

What I really want to hear about is the hydraulic hybrids they're testing. I'd love to see that technology take off.

That is because you have government employees who really have no incentive to operate the buses efficiently. I bet if the city privatized the bus system the Hybrid buses would be a lot more efficient....
