There was a failed attempt to go in commando-style and rescue the hostages. There was catastrophic equipment failure and the mission was aborted. Carter went on national television to announce the failure.

The embassy employees were still being held hostage. Any military assigned to Tehran at that time would have to have been among them. They were released in January, 1981, simultaneously with the inauguration of the Gipper, who probably would have gone in to get them.
