Palin comes out of nowhere (pitting herself against the machine) and accomplishes what she sets out to do becoming mayor and then governor of the state by the force of nothing more than her intelligence and her personality.

She has since gone on to, in a national campaign, compel the interest and affection of tens of millions of Americans

So, sure, write her off as a lightweight.

An aside- in tenth grade my biology teacher was talking about the brain. The membrane protecting the organ is called the Dura Mater, which is Latin for Tough Mother. We got a kick out of that.
