In my home state of Utah, a bill was recently shot down that proposed allowing private companies to advertise on the outside of school buses, just like they do city buses, with all proceeds going directly to public education. It was shot down even though the majority of Utahns support it.
I say that as long as the ads are approved by the school district and won't have a negative impact on the kids, I'm all for it. I see nothing to lose, but a lot of money to gain.
What are your thoughts on this?

Why not? They will look at how much money they didn’t get if this is shot down and raise taxes by just that amount. When those pigs get that money and it still isn’t enough then they will send goons out into the street to take us by the ankles, hold us upside down and shake us until all our money falls out.
So the ads will be from homosexual activist groups, Planned Parenthood, Organizing for America, and ACORN??
I am thinking the companies with the money to post ads are going to be - Coca-Cola, Pepsico, McDonald’s, etc.
Good idea - as long as the ads were for commercial products and not propaganda for liberal group think & global warming rubbish.
I don’t mind the ads as you have defined them. I like the idea of raising money for education.
With the governments’ reluctance to stop any spending, I have to say no because it is and will never be enough to satisfy the beast.
Meet these tests, and I think it is a great idea, no different from letting advertisers post billboards in stadiums were the kids play ball.
Like I said, I think it’s a good idea, as long as the ads are approved, and not radical or bad for kids.
If eliminates the need for increased School Taxes, go for it.
Exactly.
I’m pretty sure Poway Unified School District in San Diego County was selling ads on high school math tests some time back. It made the national news.
“...as the ads are approved by the school district...”
How much control do the citizens have over the school district? It might be different in Utah with the religious influence, but some places you could justly fear ads for too many things the citizens and parents wouldn’t approve.
The more of a school’s budget that doesn’t have to be taken involuntarily from my pocket the better.
Woo-hoo! Budweiser! Joe Camel!
Less taxes are always a plus
Trojans!
Not in my district please!
It’s just not worth it?
I see too many unforeseen and unintended consequences.
It’s a foot in the door for future expansion.
Then, there’s the issue of oversight.
Will there be yet another school district admin position?
Will a liberal school board favor liberal ads?
Will they have to be graffiti proof?
Will the advertisements be shown to parents first?
Supreme Court cases are expensive.
Who will pay legal costs when a parent sues?
...
Who will get approval?
No junk food, no soda, no candy, no meat products....
And when Planned Parenthood, NOW, and CAIR take out ads, what will you do?
Fairly stupid idea, are we so broke that we even need to put ads on school buses?
It’s an issue that will have to be decided by every school board of every district across the country, and it sounds like fun. Go for it.
The year was 1983. I was in Kindergarten and was attending a private (Desoto) school K-12 in Helena, AR. There are two advertisments that stand out from the usual welding supply, big family farm, CO-OP, John Deer Dealer, Local Propane/Gulf dealer etc. advertisements. The very first ad was a picture of the Senior Class Favorite (full page ad) with a caption above his head stating “Now that he has graduated welcome to MILLER TIME”. Below him in the bottom half of the page is the Miller High Life logo with the local Distribution company name below. Further back in the ads a quarter page ad for Budweiser Light bought by the local Bud distributing company says: “For all you T-Birds (the school mascot) do this Bud’s for you.” How’s that for some K-12 advertising?
So, who gets to decide what's appropriate? Who has the power to 'censor' the ads? What if I decide that I'm being unfairly being denied to advertize my Gentlemen's Club - I mean a fresh crop of High School girls 18 yrs of age could make a decent income there, right? Who do I sue?
Is the potential income worth the potential risk? I'd say 'No'; let's keep the the school system out of the commercial business, and let them continue to fail at teaching our children. I see the opportunity for failure written all over this one - and when the schools fail yet again, the Taxpayer will be hit with the costs.

Can they sell locker door ad space too?
School football and soccer fields plastered with ads?
Food Product signs on cafeteria walls?
Sports uniforms with sponsor patches (like NASCAR)
The only thing I would worry about is the approval by liberal school boards. It would end up as selling ad space to trampy clothing companies, latest trashy RAP stars, family planning clinics, liberal political candidates and issues, Oprah...
There is so little the government can do to make a profit, I say go for it. Use the opportunity to lower taxes.
It’d be better if they didn’t look like a NASCAR ... and they should certainly restrict who can market (having a Strip Club ad on there is a lousy idea).
SnakeDoc

Seriously - who would decide what is an acceptable ad and what is not? Would it be OK with you if they shot down a pro-life ad? What if they OK'ed a Planned Parenthood ad?
With this administration I can see one now,
Trojan, condoms.
Why stop at the buses? Line the classrooms with ads, maybe condom ads in restrooms. Ad inserts for the textbooks and commercials as background sounds over the P.A. system and billboards on the outside walls of the school with neon signs.
But all in good taste of course. Of course.
