Did biased rule changes knock White sorority off winner’s contest platform?
Ann Arbor Examiner ^ | March 10, 2010 | Kevin Fobbs

In February during Black History a White sorority crossed over into what has been historically black fraternities and sororities territory in winning a Black Step competition in Atlanta, Georgia.

The young women of Zeta Tau Alpha, a predominantly White sorority of well heeled steppers from the University of Arkansas beat out five other teams in the final round to win the national Sprite Step-Off competition and the $100,000 prize.

Unfortunately for the young women of Zeta Tau Alpha that started the competition with eighty teams from fraternities and sororities at forty universities their coveted first place win was not the rest of the story.

It seems that while blacks have for decades been shattering barriers in baseball, basketball, golf and finally the presidency of the United States, during Black History month, being a winning white team was somehow stepping over the color line. A few days after the stunning February 20th performance the white sisters in step from Arkansas were not allowed win fairly with...

It looked to me like, judging from the video, a lot of the audience was quite taken with their routine.

This will be interesting as it grinds along. I expect it will never be settled to everyone’s satisfaction. Even the awarding of an extra 100 grand to provide for another winning team probably won't do the trick.

I thought blatant discrimination was supposed to be wrong. This country is so whack.

Some animals are more equal than others.

When I was in college in the ‘80s, I never understood the distinction that the college enforced between “social” (white) fraternities and sororities and “service” (black) fraternities and sororities. They all seemed like primarily social organizations to me.

The biggest thing I noticed was that the black Greeks could openly haze with impunity—something that the “social” Greek organizations couldn’t do on pain of severe punishment. An ex-roommate of mine pledged Alpha Phi Alpha his senior year. He was forced to shave his head and walk around campus in a particular set of clothes. He couldn’t speak to ANYONE (except for course-related activities) unless spoken to. He wore a wooden sphinx-head around his neck with a number on it and the brothers in Alpha Phi Alpha referred to him only by that number. He had to get their meals in the cafeteria and wait on them...and then when he finally sat down to eat his lunch, they’d get up and he’d have to leave with them. This went on for weeks during his pledge period. Could’ve been worse, I guess, he could’ve been pledging Omega Psi Phi. Most “Q-dogs” that I’ve met have had a large Greek omega either tattooed or *BRANDED*—yes, honest-to-God branded—into their bicep.

The sororities weren’t any better. I remember seeing lines of girls pledging one of them (I can’t remember which, I think it was Delta Sigma Theta) marching through the dorms in matching red slickers, singing cadence songs at the top of their lungs like they were on Parris Island.

What are the odds that a white Greek organization could get away with something like that? Anyone? The double standard between the two sets of fraternities and sororities was incredible.

My husband pointed that story out to me in the newspaper. I am ashamed that the young ladies who won had their victory stolen from them on the basis of race. If the sorors had been black winning some traditionally white contest and then had their victory nullified by “sharing” first place....some folks would be incensed. I know quite a few AKA sorors (which is a boogie sorority anyway) they should be ashamed.

What is remarkable is that on Brio and other Black forum websites, the vast majority of blacks think the black sorority sucked and that the white girls should have been the only winner. So Pepsi miscalculated big time.

HOORAY Kevin Fobbs! Thanks for the article AND for being on the forum to participate in the discussion.

Everyone deserves a trophy dontcha know? Dances with collectives? Even the losers...get lucky sometimes?

Anti-individual collectives cannot be penetrated by individuals or groups of anti-collectivists.

The rights of anti-individual collectives are sacrosanct.

They’re the backbone of our existence. /sarcasm

Even though this sucks for the white sorority, they just got an even more valuable life lesson. The “black” group often “wins” in the real world strictly because of race, for example due to race based preferences and “set-asides” in bidding for government contracts.

Maybe a few of them will learn from this and shake off some of their lib indoctrination from school and college, although given the proclivity of college age women to be overwhelmingly lib, it’s not too likely.

I have been watching up this. The network broadcast was on MTV2 last Sunday- they announced the fraternity winners- then skipped away and announced the scoring change- with no video. I felt like this was the Soviet Union and history was rewritten. Very gutless on the part of Sprite- The black Greeks came across as hateful and racists. The Zeta’s from the University of Arkansas were pure class. Shame this is not making more national news. The racist comments on the part of blacks on YouTUBE was eye opening.

There are a lot of summits being held, proposed and where is a summit for simple plain and simple colorblind fairness. What do you think the answer is? Was Rev. Martin Luther King Jr’s statement about “being valued for the content of your character and not the color of your skin” an illusion, or a double standard? Drop me a note at my page and let me know how you feel about it.

Sprite is a Coca-Cola brand.

I had never heard of “stepping” before, but I am shocked at the blatant racism behind this. I’d hate to be the Sprite PR person having to get authorization for an extra $100K.
