There's a bit of a conflict going on in Turkey these days. You may have noticed.

After the fall of the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I, Turkey became a secular republic. They did very well for about 90 years. Recently, an Islamic party won a narrow victory in the elections. They aren't as crazy as the Iranians, but it's definitely a step in the wrong direction.

The armed forces, however, are still very, very secular. And proud of it. And a strong minority of the population is also secular, and wants to go back to a secular government.
