Thanks, Ruth. Great news.
Authorities in the Netherlands arrested two U.S. residents (clue - not citizens) who arrived in Amsterdam on a flight from Chicago, after U.S. authorities raised concerns about items they considered suspicious in their luggage.
Officials said at least one of the men was of Yemeni descent and both were in the U.S. legally.
Neither man has been charged in the U.S. or Netherlands. While U.S. authorities are treating the case seriously, officials say the matter hasn't prompted a massive security response, as serious plots do. U.S. investigators say they haven't established that the men were linked or intended to travel together.
The two were passengers aboard United Airlines flight 908 on Sunday night and aroused suspicion because of items found in their checked luggage, the Homeland Security department said. "The items were not deemed to be dangerous in and of themselves, and as we share information with our international partners, Dutch authorities were notified of the suspicious items. This matter continues to be under investigation," the department said.
A law enforcement official said investigators haven't determined whether the items in the luggage, which included cell phones apparently attached to bottles of liquid, were an attempt at a dry run for a possible plot, or if the items were packed in that manner inadvertently. The men traveled to Chicago on flights from Birmingham, Ala., and Memphis, Tenn., then changed their flights, which prompted further scrutiny, the official said.
Investors Head for Bunkers, Driving Up ‘Shelter Shares’
It is the ultimate bunker portfolio.
Amid the market tumult, a handful of stocks have seen their share prices ratchet up to record highs in recent weeks. And many of them are connected by a curious, if disconcerting, thread: Between them, they provide an investor with essentials for any respectable fallout sheltermakers of bottled water, canned goods, dehydrated broth, gas masks and auxiliary generators.
A portfolio of the 18 companies that reached their peaks in the past month would be up about 24% this year, compared with the broader market’s 4.5% decline, a sign some investors may be taking the prospects of financial Armageddon more seriously than one might think.
Hormel Foods Inc., the 120-year-old producer of that dugout staple, Spam, is up 12% this year, and hit an all-time high of $43.95 in recent weeks. The company’s stable of long-life provisions, from instant packets of dehydrated broth to wrapped sausages, are critical for weathering even the most prolonged storm.
Bottled-drink maker Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc., whose brands include DejaBlue purified drinking water, has soared 32% this year. The company also makes Schweppes ginger ale, great for any gnawing queasiness.
Also in the bunker club, Cummins Inc. The maker of a wide range of auxiliary power generators in addition to truck engines is up 66% this year. Shares of the Columbus, Ind., manufacturer hit a record $81.83 last Wednesday.
Hard hats and gas masks? Airgas Inc. makes both. Shares of the Radnor, Pa.-based company, which spiked in February after a hostile bid from rival Air Products & Chemicals Inc., has since added to those gains, hitting its best-ever close, at $66.72, on Friday.
“If it’s the end of the world, what do you buy? Canned foods, guns and the generators,” said Keith Springer, president of Capital Financial Advisory Services. “There are a huge number of people who feel this is the end of the world.”
Officials said at least one of the men was of Yemeni descent and both were in the U.S. legally.<<<<
I think the Yemen is the key to all this, if my memory is right, the U.S., Canada, Germany and in almost every other country in the past month or so there has been a Yemen conection.
Even the Colorado jehadi’s had Yemen connections, as well as the Airplane pantie bomber.
Right?
There is one massive plan, ready to go.
Mexico is having a lot of “fake uniform” wearing criminals attacking the good guys.
If its the end of the world, what do you buy? Canned foods, guns and the generators, said Keith Springer, president of Capital Financial Advisory Services.<<<
I agree, now is a good time for stocking up.
If one only allows for the fact that every month the prices go up, all that you buy ahead, will save money in the long run.
And there is something nice about having food on hand.
Interesting article, glad you posted it.

This morning the news said they were not traveling together and therefore, no threat -— Uh Huh - I have a bridge to sell somewhere.
I mean really, what good reason would they have for the odd configuration of cell phones attached to various objects with liquid???
Someone, somewhere must have information in order for those stocks to be doing so well while everything else is, for the most part, in the toilet.
Would really love to know who has purchased those stocks and if there’s a tie-in between all?
In other news, there’s something wrong with my knee - I can’t put any weight on that leg. This could turn out to be quite a mess for me. :(

Poison Gas Sickened Girls in Afghan Schools

ROD NORDLAND
New York Times
KABUL, Afghanistan - Blood tests have confirmed that a mysterious series of
cases of mass sickness at girls’ schools across the country over the last
two years were caused by a powerful poison gas, an Afghan official said
Tuesday.
The admission came in an interview, as a spokesman for the Ministry of
Public Health was answering questions about two new episodes in the last
week. The spokesman, Dr. Kargar Norughli, said his ministry and the
http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/w/world_health_organization/index.html?inline=nyt-org
World Health Organization had
been testing the blood of victims in 10 mass sickenings and had confirmed
the presence of toxic but not fatal levels of organophosphates. Those
compounds are widely used in insecticides and herbicides, and are also the
active ingredients of compounds developed in the past as chemical weapons,
including sarin and VX gas.
Dr. Norughli did not explain why the confirmations had not been announced
earlier.

Nation’s nuclear power plants prepare for cyberattacks
By Martin Matishak, Global Security Newswire 08/30/2010
The threat to digital systems at the country’s nuclear power plants is
considerable, but the sector is better prepared to defend against
potentially devastating cyberattacks than most other utilities, according to
government and industry officials and experts.
Cyberattacks have been an increasing source of concern in recent years but
the threat was highlighted in July by the first discovery of malicious code
specifically formulated to target the systems that direct the inner
operations of industrial plants. To date the malware is thought to have
infected more than 15,000 computers worldwide, mostly in Iran, Indonesia and
India.
The issue is critically important for new nuclear power facilities that
would be built in the United States and throughout the world as control
rooms would employ digital systems to operate the plants. Those
state-of-the-art instruments and systems make them targets for hackers.
A U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokeswoman declined to say whether
there have been any cyber strikes against the nation’s nuclear power sector.
Security events, including a computer-based attack at an energy facility,
would be “sensitive information” and therefore not released to the public,
she said.

Discovery Channel HQ Gunman Has San Diego Ties
POSTED: 1:05 pm PDT September 1, 2010
UPDATED: 1:18 pm PDT September 1, 2010
SILVER SPRINGS, Md. — A man upset with the Discovery Channel’s environmental programming took several people hostage at the company’s headquarters Wednesday, officials said.
Police were negotiating with the gunman, who burst into the suburban Washington building about 1 p.m. wearing what seemed to be metallic canisters strapped to his front and back and waving a handgun.
The gunman had what Montgomery County Police Chief Thomas Manger described as a “small number of hostages” but he did not say how many. He also did not say what the man wants or whether anyone was hurt.

condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing said authorities have identified James J. Lee as the likely suspect. Police believe he has a handgun but have not confirmed that he has explosives, the official said.
A different official, who spoke on condition of anonymity for the same reason, said Lee previously protested outside the building.
According to a story in The Gazette, which covers Montgomery County, Lee was arrested there in 2008 after throwing thousands of dollars in the air outside the building.
Lee said he planned the protest because Discovery’s programming had little to do with saving the planet. He was identified then as being from San Diego although he gave a local address of a homeless shelter.

Thanks for all the pings today. I took my Dad to lunch today and then to the golf course. It is his 94th birthday, and he is still amazing. He rides the golf cart now, but his swing is long and straight. We only played five holes, but he had a great time.
Your pings helped me catch up with the news.
Ruth, I’ve watched your Pinal County Sheriff, Paul Babeau, on Fox News several times. He is quite impressive......doing all he can against all odds. In fact, I’m pretty impressed with alot I’m hearing out of Arizona.
Hope you are well.
I saw where they are using drones on the border now - my question is what do they do if they see people entering illegally?
