Manila, Philippines, Apr 15, 2010 / 03:01 am (CNA).- Abu Sayyaf militants conducted a bombing assault on Isabela City in the Philippines on Tuesday morning, killing several people and severely damaging the Cathedral of St. Isabel. The local bishop said the cathedral was “totally” damaged.
At least 25 militants with the Al Qaeda-linked group, dressed in police and camouflaged military uniforms, set off two bombs that blew up a van and damaged the 40-year-old cathedral. A third bomb placed near a judge’s house and a bus terminal was safely detonated by soldiers.
It was the worst attack by the group in months, Agence France Presse reports. The attacks started gun battles around the city as militants targeted helpless civilians.
City mayor Cherry Akbar initially told reporters that at least 15 people were killed in the violence, including five militants who apparently died in the first blast. The dead also included three Philippine Marines, a policeman and six civilians. The death toll was later revised downward to 14.
One of the dead was identified as a brother of Furuju Indama, a top Abu Sayyaf leader on the island of Basil.
Catholics are a minority in Basilan province. Responding to the attacks, Bishop Martin S. Jumoad of the Prelature of Isabela said the cathedral was “totally damaged” because its posts were weakened by the blast, CBCP News says.
“I am very, very sad the House of the Lord has been destroyed,” he added.
The 53-year-old prelate said he does not know how to rebuild the cathedral, constructed in 1970 with a capacity for 1,400 worshipers.
Philippines authorities said policemen and two Marine personnel responded to the first explosion at 9:30 a.m. at the Grandstand near the Basilan National High School but were fired upon by armed men.
A second explosion took place at about 10:30 a.m. in the vicinity of the cathedral and the city plaza. The improvised explosive device was placed in a motorcycle.
The blasts shattered the cathedral’s stained glass windows and damaged the priests’ rectory. Several priests’ service vehicles were also destroyed.
Regional military chief Lieutenant General Ben Dolorfino said military intelligence had received reports of an impending attack, but not its details, AFP says.
“They were planning something big. This was well planned and apparently they were well funded.”
Authorities suspect that politicians who hired mercenaries may have been behind the attacks.
“There were indications that the Abu Sayyaf was being used to sow violence, it was not pure terrorism,” said Senior Supt. Antonio Mendoza, Basilan police chief.

Muslim Egyptian Girl Who Converted to Christianity Subjected to Acid Attack

ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT (ANS) — The Assyrian International News Agency (www.aina.org), is reporting the shocking news that Dina el-Gowhary, a 15-year-old Egyptian Muslim-born girl who converted to Christianity, has been subjected to an acid attack, the latest in a string of failed attempts by Muslim fanatics against her and her father, 57-year-old Peter Athanasius (Maher el-Gowhary), who converted to Christianity 35 years ago.
In a story written by Mary Abdelmassih for AINA, several Fatwa’s were issued calling for the “spilling of his blood,” which makes their lives in constant danger in the face of the reactionaries and advocates for the enforcement of Islamic apostasy laws, which call for the death of a convert.
According to Abdelmassih, Dina said that three weeks ago, as she ventured out from their hiding place in Alexandria with her father to get some bottled water, her jacket was set on fire due to acid being thrown at her.
“My father quickly took my jacket off before the fire reached my arms,” she said. “Ever since then I am terrorized to go out in the street, with or without my father.”
Through an aired interview with Free Copts advocacy, Abdelmassih said that Dina had addressed an open letter to President Mubarak of Egypt begging him to “save her and her father” and also be allowed to “leave Egypt”.
Dina said that she had written previously to U.S. President Barrack Obama, who “got her message and responded to it”.
It was reported that the el-Gowhary’s met with the US Committee on International Religious Freedom on their last visit to Egypt in January 2010, and that they asked for asylum in the United States.
Dina said that she wonders whether she will get the same attention from President Mubarak as she did from President Obama.
“Will he listen and lend us a helping hand, if, as they claim, he truly does not differentiate between Muslim and Christian citizens?” she pondered.
Dina asked the Egyptian President, who newly became grandfather to a baby girl, “Do you accept that your granddaughter would live under the same conditions like mine? I have no home, I am always afraid when I go to church or even go out in the street, I have no friends and no education.”
Abdelmassih said that in her letter to President Mubarak, Dina expressed her “deep distress at the mistreatment and continuous troubles she finds everywhere she goes, including being beaten and humiliated.”
She tells of how “because of her love for Jesus” she left her Muslim mother and went to live with her Christian father, abandoning school where she was persecuted by teachers and students.
“I was threatened many times before. Once coming back from school, a bearded young man stepped out of a car, lifted me through my clothes from the ground and warned me that if my father and myself do not go back to Islam, both of us will be killed.”
Dina, now living with her father for the last two years, has to move with him “from one place to another in search of personal safety for both, in the face of the many threats that they experienced since her father declared his conversion to Christianity and his desire to his change religious designation in official documents.”
Abdelmassih went on to say that in June 2009, a Court refused his request to order the Civil Registry to alter his religious designation on his ID to reflect his Christian religion and his Christian name, Peter Athanasius. The Court ruling said that the religious conversion of a Muslim is against Islamic Sharia law and poses a threat to the “Public Order” in Egypt. He appealed the Court ruling.
In the Free Copts interview, Dina said that she hopes that President Mubarak will help them to leave Egypt in order for them to live normally and for her to continue her education.
The el-Gowhary family was barred from leaving Egypt on September 17, 2009 “without any legal reason” said the writer. “They were told, however, that the order came from a higher authority. To this today, says Maher, he does not know why he is barred from travel and which authority exactly is barring him.”
He explained, in a interview with Free Copts this week, the extremely difficult circumstances they are living under, being hunted the whole time and with many attempts on their lives. “It is only due to the Grace and Protection of God, that we are still alive until today,” he adds.
“Why did they confiscate our passports? What have we done wrong?” said Dina. “The only thing we did is that we loved Jesus with all their hearts and converted to Christianity.” The teenage girl stressed that whatever the government does or will to them to force them to abandon Christianity is in vain.
“We will never leave Christianity and we will never ever revert back to Islam. Jesus is simply etched in our hearts,” she said.

Pakistani prosecutors claim that five Americans currently on trial for attempting to join al Qaeda were in contact with a top leader of the terror group.
The five Americans are said to have made contact with Qari Saifullah Akhtar, the leader of the radical Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami and the commander of al Qaeda’s Brigade 313. Prosecutors presented evidence, including phone calls, emails, and other documents that linked Akhtar and the five would-be terrorists, according to Dawn.
Akhtar recruited the five Americans after watching their videos posted on YouTube, according to Pakistani police officials. Akhtar was able to obtain emails through the YouTube postings and encouraged the men to travel to Pakistan to join the jihad.
The five American Muslim men were detained in the city of Sargodha in Punjab province in December 2009 after a family member discovered they were missing and contacted the FBI. The five Americans have been identified as Umar Farooq, Waqar Hussain, Rami Zamzam, Ahmad Abdullah Mini, and Amman Hassan Yammer.”

Column One: The Haaretz spy scandal

Haaretz provides Israeli affirmation for anti-Israel attitudes.
Over the past two weeks Israel has been rocked by a major espionage
scandal in which the Haaretz newspaper plays a central role. To
understand the significance of the scandal, it is worthwhile to
preface a discussion of it with a look at a smaller story Haaretz
developed this week.
On Sunday, Haaretz’s Amira Hass reported that in January, the IDF
published a new military order that paves the way for the mass
expulsion of illegal aliens from Judea and Samaria. The story sported
the disturbing headline, “IDF order will enable mass deportation from
West Bank.”
In a follow-up on Monday, Hass reported that 10 self-described human
rights organizations (all funded by the New Israel Fund) sent a joint
letter to Defense Minister Ehud Barak asking him to rescind the order.
She noted, too, that, “the international media also has taken great
interest in the story.”

On Wednesday, Haaretz reported that Jordan had joined it in condemning Israel.
That’s quite an accomplishment for an Israeli newspaper with a
negligible share of the domestic market.
The only problem is that the order Hass reported on is 41 years old.
After creating an international scandal, on Wednesday Haaretz
acknowledged that the supposedly new order has been in place since
1969. What changed in January is that the IDF decided to expand the
rights of illegal aliens in Judea and Samaria to pre-deportation
hearings.

Gunman opens fire at Tenn. hospital; kills 1, self
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A gunman took a taxi to a hospital and gave the cab driver $20 to wait, then opened fire Monday in an area where patients are released, killing one woman before committing suicide.
All the victims were women and current or former employees of Parkwest Medical Center, Knoxville Police Chief Sterling Owen IV said. The attack happened about 4:30 p.m. outside the hospital’s discharge area.
Police are still trying to determine a motive, but it did not appear that any of the victims were related to the suspect or that there was any connection between them, spokesman Darrell DeBusk said. Police also don’t think the suspect was ever employed at the hospital.
Cab driver Freddys Sakhleh told The Associated Press that he picked up the suspect outside an apartment building and they made several stops on the way to the hospital, including to an ATM where the gunman got $20. The man said little about himself, only that he was from Atlanta....

Westchester Man Sentenced to 121 Months in Prison in Manhattan Federal Court for Attempting to Finance Terrorism and Perpetrating Massive Investment Fraud
PREET BHARARA, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that ABDUL TAWALA IBN ALI ALISHTARI was sentenced today in Manhattan federal court to 121 months in prison after previously pleading guilty to charges of terrorism financing and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The sentence was imposed by United States District Judge ALVIN K. HELLERSTEIN.
According to the Information to which ALISHTARI pleaded guilty, other publicly filed documents, and statements made during ALISHTARI’s guilty plea and sentencing proceedings:
In the latter half of 2006, ALISHTARI facilitated the transfer of $152,500, believing that the funds would be used in Afghanistan and Pakistan to help train terrorists. ALISHTARI understood that these funds would be used to purchase equipment needed at a terrorist training camp, such as night vision goggles. Unknown to ALISHTARI, the man with whom he was working to transfer the money was actually an undercover law enforcement officer (”UC-1”).
To arrange for the transfer of funds, ALISHTARI and UC-1 had numerous meetings, which were recorded. In June 2006, during one meeting, UC-1 explained to ALISHTARI that UC-1 sought to move money that UC-1 received from “donors” to provide “medical supplies,” “equipment,” and “night vision goggles” for “good Muslims” who were “there fighting for a good cause.” ALISHTARI responded, “Muslims don’t fight; we defend,” and, “we have a right to defend ourselves.” ALISHTARI also told UC-1 that if UC-1 wished to “weaponize”—which ALISHTARI defined as “buying goggles or . . . gas stuff”—UC-1 must be “three steps away” from the money, so that the money could not be traced back to UC-1.
During other meetings, ALISHTARI offered to introduce UC-1 to an associate (”Imam-1”) who, according to ALISHTARI, was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. ALISHTARI described Imam-1 as a “fire-breathing” imam, who took the view that “the axis of the Islamic world is about Jerusalem and defeating the Jews.” ALISTHARI additionally stated that Imam-1 was a “recruiter” who placed people to “work” in Bosnia and Chechnya. In September 2006, ALISHTARI in fact arranged for a meeting between Imam-1 and UC-1 at a New York City hotel room.
ALISHTARI also orchestrated a large-scale fraud in which he stole upwards of $18 million from his victims through the operation of a loan investment program he called the “Flat Electronic Data Interchange” (”FEDI”) which was purportedly a high-yield investment scheme. ALISHTARI promised his FEDI investors that they would receive high, guaranteed rates of return. In reality, few, if any, of the investors received back the money they had invested, let alone the promised returns; meanwhile, ALISHTARI diverted investor money to pay for his own expenses and to support a lavish lifestyle.
At his guilty plea on September 29, 2009, ALISHTARI admitted that he was paid $15,000 to move a total of approximately $152,000 for UC-1, and acknowledged that UC-1 “specifically said” that this money was intended to go to terrorist training camps. ALISHTARI further acknowledged that, when he transferred these funds, he understood what terrorist training camps were and that terrorists kill civilians.
ALISHTARI also admitted during his guilty plea that he “unlawfully, willfully and knowingly made false representations and promises with regard to the collection and expenditures of portions of money” that he collected from investors in FEDI. ALISHTARI further admitted that he “intentionally overstated and exaggerated the progress of this program and thereby fraudulently obtained funds from investors.”
In addition to the prison term, Judge HELLERSTEIN sentenced ALISHTARI to three years of supervised release and indicated that restitution would be ordered to the victims, in an exact amount to be determined in the next 90 days.
In sentencing ALISHTARI, Judge HELLERSTEIN stated: “It remains clear that you did want the ends that were put to you for the placement of money. You knew these ends were assisting terrorism that was of a type, that it was on the edge of causing substantial death and destruction to people like you and me, and government lawyers, and people in your family who have come. The very fabric of civilization is endangered by terrorism.”
ALISHTARI, 57, resided in Ardsley, New York, prior to his arrest on February 15, 2007. He has been detained since his arrest.
Mr. BHARARA praised the efforts of the Joint Terrorism Task Force of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New York City Police Department, and thanked the United States Securities and Exchange Commission for its assistance in the investigation.
Assistant United States Attorneys JOHN P. CRONAN and PETER M. SKINNER from the Office’s new Terrorism and International Narcotics Unit are in charge of the prosecution.
