The Burning Windsor band traveled north on I-55 in Holmes County, Mississippi early Saturday afternoon. The band was trying to get to Memphis for a gig Saturday night. They never realized they were driving straight into the path of an EF4 tornado! Check out this video (and make sure you click the button on the lower right to make it full scream, er, I mean full screen). The preliminary damage survey by the National Weather Service from the tornadoes in Mississippi on Saturday is nothing short of incredible. There is a continuous tornado damage path of 97 miles from west of Tullulah, Louisiana to Durant, Mississippi. That’s where they had to stop surveying for the day. The continuous track may extend for a total of 160 miles to the north of Columbus! There was one spot where the tornado was an astonishing 1.75 miles wide! The survey team found two spots where damage was rated EF4 with winds estimated to be 170 mph (in Yazoo City and in Holmes Co.).

That was pretty interesting. That band is very lucky.

How many lost and suffered over this? Better than me, I am certain, were caught up in that funnel.

First there was Snowmageddon; then there was the Iceland Ash. Now this — worse than both of those combined. FRiend, I think someone Upstairs is starting to get miffed. America needs to pray!

Hey! I missed it. In all this devastation where is all the looting, pillaging, raping and all the other unlawfullness? Oh, I forgot this is not New Orleans.

Seriously, I pray for all those who lost something is those horrible tornados over the weekend. May God Bless you all and keep you safe.

Good point. Here’s the counter —

Bush had to overcome 9-11 and a downturn at the same time.

The size and pwoer of this tornado is very similar to the Tri-State tornado of 1925.

I heard the Governor of Miss. telling about individuals loading up their four wheelers and chain saws in their pick up trucks and just getting to work cleaning up the mess.

Guess they didn’t get the memo about sitting around and waiting for FEMA?

Gods always speaking to us, the real question is if we’re listening.

Great stuff, Bill. You have been my favorite meteorologist since I was just a little kid. Congrats for braving the wilds of the media with your conservative credentials !!!
Lord knows you have a tough job!
I believe the band is changing their name to
“twisting in the wind”

One of the great fears in the US Midwest is that the downtown of a large city such as Kansas City, Topeka, Wichita, St. Louis, Memphis, Little Rock, Oklahoma City, Dallas-Fort Worth, and so on is an F4 to F5 supertornado about 1.5 to 2 miles wide barreling through the downtown of the city.

Imagine a tornado with winds in the 250 km/h (155 mph) to 400 km/h (248 mph) range 1.5 to 2 miles wide. If if barrels through the downtown of a large city all the smaller buildings will be flattened, medium sized buildings will suffer substantial damage from flying debris and the windows in all the taller skyscrapers will be blown out, damaging the contents inside the taller buildings. It would be equivalent of the effects of a blast wave from a 1 MT nuclear blast about two miles from Ground Zero.

I think that if God were trying to say something that substantial, he'd make his statement a little closer to the cause of our problems. Imagine an F-4 tornado whipping through Washington, DC.

Atlanta had one go through downtown in March 2008. Luckily it was a “small” one. Lots of windows blown out, some structural damage, etc. They were able to warn far enough in advance that there weren’t many casualties.
