LOL not at all. What you posted was altered from the original verse. It was even altered in such a fundamental way that if followed would lead people away from Christ and towards damnation.

I pray that nobody was lead into error through that post as it would be better to have a large millstone hung around the neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

NO.

IT.

WAS.

NOT.

If you don't like the translation, that's your problem. Not mine. Don't try to impose your problems on me.

Sez You.

Again, don't attempt to impose your problems on me, and don't presume to impose your personal interpretation of Scripture on anybody.

BTW, "to repent" is a transitive verb. It is an action, a work. Even your preferred translation contradicts your personal interpretation of Scripture.

IMHO.

I think we're beyond the "God speaking to us" stage.

I think we're now in the "wrapping up" of the present age stage.

Yes, it was altered. As proof, here is the verse from 14 different translations:

New International Version
I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.

New Living Translation
Not at all! And you will perish, too, unless you repent of your sins and turn to God.

English Standard Version
No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.

New American Standard Bible
“I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.

International Standard Version
Absolutely not, I tell you! But if you don’t repent, then you, too, will all die.

GOD’S WORD® Translation
No! I can guarantee that they weren’t. But if you don’t turn to God and change the way you think and act, then you, too, will all die.

King James Bible
I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

American King James Version
I tell you, No: but, except you repent, you shall all likewise perish.

American Standard Version
I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all in like manner perish.

Bible in Basic English
I say to you, It is not so: but if your hearts are not changed, you will all come to the same end.

Darby Bible Translation
No, I say to you, but if ye repent not, ye shall all perish in the same manner.

English Revised Version
I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all in like manner perish.

Webster’s Bible Translation
I tell you, No; but except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Weymouth New Testament
I tell you, certainly not. On the contrary, if you are not penitent you will all perish as they did.

World English Bible
I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all perish in the same way.

Young’s Literal Translation
No — I say to you, but, if ye may not reform, all ye even so shall perish.

It *is* your problem. Do you have *any* idea of the magnitude of the punishment for altering Bible verses and then teaching them? The verse was altered in a way that DIRECTLY leads people away from the Saving Grace of Christ and towards eternal punishment.

Repenting is not a work that when performed will earn you salvation. No matter how hard you try you will never go your entire life without sinning, and that is what is required to be saved through your own self. That was the lesson of the Law in the Old Testament.

Salvation is a gift and could never, ever be earned by anyone. No matter what you do. I.e. no penance. Salvation is freely given as the ultimate act of love to anyone who asks for it. Anyone. Once you have it, do your best not to sin. Not because doing so will save you, you are already saved. Repent because your Lord asked you to. If you are really His, if He is your King, you would follow and obey Him. That’s why you can tell who is His from their fruits.

LR, do you remember the year you got caught in the storm between Nashville and Cookeville? When we lived near Cookville and I was working at the Cracker Barrel, there was a terrible storm came through that was very frightening. I remember that my son was at home west of Cookeville and I called him and told him where to go to lay low. I was more scared for him, but I think the roof of the shopping center behind the CB nearly blew off. I think that was around 1982.

Yep, I was actually there in 1997, so it definitely wasn’t the same storm! ;) I actually almost got a job in one of the restaurants across the street from the Cracker Barrel while I was down there, too — so I know EXACTLY where you’re talking about.

About 7-8 years ago, I was out in Iowa helping a friend work on his house. It was a beautiful summer day, the kind that just breed thunderstorms. As evening was coming on you could see the clouds building in the west. As time went by, you could see the storms approaching. I say "storms" because you could definetly see one towards the north and one towards the south, and then one directly to the west.

We drove out on this country road about a mile maybe 2 from his house, and watched the storms come in. What a show. Gods creation was really putting on a show that night. When the storm arrived, the wind PICKED UP about a minute or 2 before the rain came down. And when I say rain, I mean fire hose rain.

Went back to his house, and since there wasn't anything that could be done outside, except try to coax lightning down, we went in and watched a movie. My buddy had a nice big screen with an awesome stereo system. He had a huge assortment of movies, so he asked what I wanted to watch. I browsed through and as soon as I saw it I knew it would be a good movie for that night.

Twister.

There were no tornados that night, at least near where we were. But the T-storm was pretty strong. Gave a little more realism to the movie :)

I used to stay at my grandparents or my aunts, in Michigan when I was a kid. I can remember real well, what it was like when those storms would come in out in the country. City storms seldom seem as strong as country storms, unless of course the city storm has a tornado in it.

Watching Twister always takes me back to those country storms when I was a kid.

I was working on a high rise being built in downtown Chicago about 20 years ago. About 30-40 stories up, open sides-no windows, and a strong storm came in. No matter where you stood, rain came in. I swear it seemed like it blew in one side of the building and went out the other. The wind up at that height is always stronger than on the ground.

Made it down a few floors to wear windows were in, and able to get out of the rain. We could see Lake Michigan about a mile away, and maybe 1/2-1 mile out in the lake was a pretty good size water spout.

THAT was ...Interesting.

Ahh, but no cows. (If you've seen Twister)
Respect The Wind

Prayers up for those in Miss.

I believe that was an F2 tornado. My concern is an F4 or F5 tornado a mile wide or more hitting a city downtown with winds over 166 mph (267 km/h). At those wind speeds, wooden frame and many steel frame buildings will be flattened, medium-sized buildings of steel and concrete will suffer a LOT of damage from flying debris, skyscrapers will have all their windows blown out and the interior suffer severe wind damage--it would be akin to being about two miles from Ground Zero of a 1 MT nuclear bomb going off when wind from the blast wave hits you.

MM -- I'll reply to the post you wrote in a moment. :)

I just uploaded the photo I spoke of above -- the one I took of the tornado in Adams County, CO. I believe it was in 2000, but I'd have to look at records to make sure (I'm not good at remembering to date my photos).

Anyway, this was too far away for us to feel any wind at all from this funnel clouds. Where I lived is kind of on a ridge "above" Denver (if one were to be able to see the topography of the area still). This tornado was moving almost due South, but I don't know how far away it really was. Plus, I don't remember HOW I got this photo -- whether I saw it and grabbed my camera, or whether the TV was on and I was looking for it after hearing a warning.

Anyway, here's the pic of the only true "tornado" I've ever seen... Wish my camera was better, but I'm not really complaining. I'm lucky to have caught it in the first place!!!

Tornado in Adams County, CO - 2000 or 2001

In the Greek the word is μετανοητε which translates into metanoias or metanonite

met·a·noi·a   /ˌmɛtəˈnɔɪə/ Spelled[met-uh-noi-uh]
–noun
a profound, usually spiritual, transformation; conversion.

Origin:
1870–75; < Gk metánoia change of mind, repentance; see meta-, -noia

Now there is a Greek word for penance or penitence which is μετάνοια

μετανοητε = Repent
μετάνοια = Penance

The words are similar in there roots, but Greek being a more accurate language than english has more meanings or I should say more DETAILED meanings.

pen·ance   /ˈpɛnəns/ Show Spelled[pen-uhns]
–noun
1. a punishment undergone in token of penitence for sin.
2. a penitential discipline imposed by church authority.
3. a sacrament, as in the Roman Catholic Church, consisting in a confession of sin, made with sorrow and with the intention of amendment, followed by the forgiveness of the sin.

The difference between the to words is μετανοητε pretty much means a confession and change of heart. μετάνοια means punishment or discpline ALONG with the confession or change of heart.

Now lets take a look at the verse-in the NASB (Just for ease of reading.

1Now on the same occasion there were some present who reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.

2And Jesus said to them, "Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered this fate?

3"I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.

4"Or do you suppose that those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them were worse culprits than all the men who live in Jerusalem?

5"I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish."

Now this is Jesus speaking, which seems more likely in the context? That a man confess and change his heart, or that a man confess, change and serve discipline OR be put to death.

If we go further in the passage a parable is given

6And He began telling this parable: "A man had a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and did not find any.

7"And he said to the vineyard-keeper, 'Behold, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree without finding any. Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground?'

8"And he answered and said to him, 'Let it alone, sir, for this year too, until I dig around it and put in fertilizer;

9and if it bears fruit next year, fine; but if not, cut it down.'"

Nowhere in the parable was there discipline for the tree. The tree was nurtured and it changed its ways, or it was to be cut down.

Your description of watching the storms come in sounds amazing... My husband and I have always loved watching the storms (when we’ve got a good view). (Colorado was especially awesome for watching strange cloud formations coming in off the mountains.)

That’s funny with you all watching “Twister”. In what was pretty bad timing on Saturday, while I was on the live thread here at FR for this tornado the CW (TV Channel) in my area was playing “Where the Heart Is”, and there is a scene in the movie where a little girl almost gets ripped out of the storm cellar because the door hadn’t closed! That wasn’t too fun to watch while listening to what was going on down South on Sat., but I can totally see how the storm would add atmosphere for watching Twister! LOL

I know what you mean about the country storms seeming worse... It’s got to be because there is just nothing to stop the wind except a few trees here and there... Although for some reason I feel safer when actually in the country with storms than in the town or city... I think it’s because in-town you can’t see it coming. Where I live now I didn’t see the tornado that hit a few blocks over because there are too many houses and especially trees along the river...

Very cool about seeing the water spout on Lake Michigan! I grew up outside Chicago, so I’ve heard of them, but never saw one (except on the TV News — I wonder if it was the same one you’re talking about! LOL). I know exactly what you mean about the winds being stronger that high up as well. Plus, just being in the city on a windy and rainy day is interesting. The way it whips through the buildings and swirls is crazy sometimes... Especially in the heart of “the Loop”.

That is a really cool video — thanks for sharing it!
Especially amazing re: the deer running from one in a part of Jim Reed’s footage... And then that one guy a bit later!?!? I’ve never seen anyone appear to try to do a “suicide by tornado” before!!! What was he doing? And how did he know it was going to break up??? INSANITY!!!

I especially like the lightning shots at the beginning. My sister and I used to watch the lightning from my bedroom window at night and count how far away they were... Speaking of which — I saw one of those HUGE bolts one time when my Mom and I were in the car. It was GIGANTIC with what looked like a million tentacles coming off of 2-3 main “arteries”. I’ve got a ton of lightning stories (one close call, two about burning transformers), but that one when I was probably about 8 or 9 yo, is the one single bolt of lightning I can remember clearly in my mind to this day (wish I could draw! LOL).

Anyway, thanks for sharing your stories. God’s creation is certainly beautiful, and downright terrifying at the same time once in a while! Always amazing though.

Wow ... a whole bunch of protestant translations.

What, is that supposed to impress me or something?

Salvation is a gift and could never, ever be earned by anyone.

You're arguing against a position that neither I, nor the Bible I quoted, take.

Get over yourself.

The song is at the very end of Twister.

I was on a flight to Colorado one time. Our plane had to divert around a storm. Its something to watch the thunderheads building, from the ground, its just as cool to see them from an airplane. The clouds were billowing up to our level, maybe a little higher. With the golden sun on them they were GORGEOUS. As we went farther on around, could see the gray beneath and lightning. Very cool.

Watched what appeared to be heat lightning, one evening on a flight home from Fla.

Gods nature is BEAUTIFUL.
