Firefox 4 Beta 1: Tell us what you think!
Mozilla Blog ^ | 7-6-10 | Mike Beltzner

Firefox 4 Beta 1 is now ready to download and test! This first version gives an early look at what’s planned for Firefox 4. Stay tuned, because there is more to come and we plan to release new beta versions every two to three weeks. Your feedback is essential to help shape the product which is why we’re launching now to hear from you early in our development process.

Firefox 4 Beta 1 includes dozens of major features and improvements – by testing them early we’ll be able to respond to your feedback for future versions of Firefox. Once you download Firefox 4 Beta 1, you’re part of our beta program and will receive regular updates as more features launch.

If you are using a Windows PC, the most noticeable new feature will be the look of the browser. We moved the tabs to the top to make it easier to focus on the web content and easier to control the tools in your Web browser. Also, if you have Windows 7 or Windows Vista the Menu bar was replaced with a single Firefox button so you can get to the most used options with just one click. These changes will be coming soon for Mac and Linux.

There is a lot more to this beta than a facelift on Windows, including:

* New Add-Ons Manager: gives you more space to manage your Add-Ons, Themes and Plugins. Customizing your browser has never been easier!

* HD Video: Watch hardware-accelerated, super-smooth, HD-quality HTML5 video on YouTube using the new WebM format.

* Privacy improvements: Mozilla always puts privacy first, and this latest beta fixes flaws in some Web standards that could expose your browser history.

* Crash Protection: More at link

* Performance: More at link

Hope it’s good enough for me to start using Firefox again. Firefox is feature-wise better than Chrome but till now hasn’t handled pressure as well.

I switched over to Chrome long ago. I got tired of Firefox crashing 3 times a day. Firefox is way too bloated as well IMO

Crap!

Leave things alone!

I use Tab Mix Plus so I can put tabs at the bottom of the screen.

Change for the sake of change is not necessarily improvement.

No mention of JAVA acceleration, the “killer app” feature in Chrome.

Seriously. It may be that I was using FF on my work PC, but I never liked it. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

I’ve had some problems with Firefox crashing, not closing entirely on exit, and in past, at least, memory hogging and leaking.

As far as the crashing goes, the restore is pretty good. I suspect some of the problems come from 3rd party software, like AVG anti-virus, which is kind of camel-nosing-into-the-tent with Firefox.

The not closing entirely on exit is an odd one, infrequent, but is a legit glitch. I have to use Task Manager to close it out entirely before it can be restarted.

It has improved considerably as far as memory hogging goes. Right now, for example, I’m only using 125k, which is small indeed compared to what it used to be. A lot of this I gather was fixed by improving the add-ons and themes, which were responsible for a lot of the nonsense.

He may not be a troll. I still use Firefox, but it does hang and crash frequently. I won't touch Chrome because I don't trust Google with my browsing data.

I had the opposite problem. Chrome was crashing on me so often that I switched back to Firefox. I’m using FF 3.6, and it hasn’t crashed on me yet.
