The Dove World Outreach Center, a non-denominational church in Gainesville FL, is planning to mark this year's anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks with a little bonfire of Korans, the holy book of Islam. They even have a Facebook page with a mission statement to justify their actions:
"On September 11th, 2010 we will burn the Koran on the property of Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, FL in remembrance of the fallen victims of 9/11 and to stand against the evil of Islam. Islam is of the devil!"
The church, which also protests against issues such as homosexuality, same-sex marriage, and abortion, has decorated it's front lawn with signs proclaiming "Islam is of the devil!" and it's pastor, Terry Jones, has even authored a book with that title.
According to Jones, the organizers got the idea from another Facebook event, "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day" earlier this year.
In an article released by Religion News Service (RNS), Jones said that protests are key to the mission of his church.
"We feel, as Christians, one of our jobs is to warn," said Jones, and that the goal these and other protests are to give Muslims an opportunity to convert.
Since the Facebook page went up a week ago, Jones said people have been sending him Korans to burn.
Response from Florida's Islamic community has been relatively muted so far. September 11 this year falls within the Eid al-Fitr holiday when Muslims mark the end of fasting for the holy month of Ramadan. RNS reports that local Muslims are planning to use the feast as an opportunity to share Islamic traditions and Qurans with the church members and the wider community.

Why clog up your toilet with a gross book? Fire works much better.
Now if they were to burn the American Flag, the PC crowd wold consider that “Freedom of Speech”, “Bold Patriotism”, “A statement”, “A celebration of courage”...
wold -> would
Hw about ‘shove a burning koran about a jihadi’s ass’ day?
I think this is a very poor idea, this is exactly the kind of thing that would rile up even moderate Muslims — how would we like it if the Muslim countries would have “burn the Bible” days.
I am all for calling the terrorists Islamist terrorists, because they DO commit their terrorism in the name of their religion. I am against allowing them to mock our sacred Ground Zero by building a mosque nearby.
BUT burning Korans is ill-advised and counterproductive.
Ping!
I wonder how many “Burn the Bible!” days there are sponsored by mosques. Would we even hear about ones that occur in Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia or Malaysia?
What is the impact of events such as these?
Burning Korans is too much of a health risk to fall within the Public Option guidelines. Its worse than a pre-existing condition.
These folks are on the right track to baiting the fascist mob now running the country. Lets see what develops.
But burning them won't garner much of a response from the Islamic fatwa-ists, its the trampling on them with feet that really ticks them off.The trampling needs to come before the burning.
From the article: “He (Ibrahaim Hooper) said CAIR’s research shows that anti-Muslim bias decreases when people have access to accurate information about Islam...”
If by “accurate” you mean islamic propoganda, then I believe you. If however, by accurate, you actually MEAN accurate, then I seriously doubt it.
Your post: “how would we like it if the Muslim countries would have “burn the Bible” days.”
Either you’re being sarcastic, or you are just a naive fool. In muzzie countries, it’s illegal to be a Christian, and is only barely tolerated by the governments there because they are charged a special non-muzzie tax. And don’t even try to convert any muzzies to Christianity... it’s the death penalty for you and your convert if you do.
Your post: “...this is exactly the kind of thing that would rile up even moderate Muslims...”
Hah hah hah!! Good one!! Yeah, it’s our fault that otherwise wonderful people suddenly want to blow us to smithereens!! Dude, you are a total tool.
Wouldn't faze me at all. They've probably had many such days; including the burning of live Christians.
How is it counter productive? Jesus would burn a Koran. Jesus was not afraid to get into the faces of "religious" people and tell them they were wrong. We shouldn't be either. Either you believe in God or you don't or you believe in a false god.
That would never happen since possession of a Bible in a Muslim country would get you a punishment ranging from several years in prison, to a death sentence. Thanks for playing.
Hmmm... has a nice ring to it.
If they want to do something productive, like demanding that KSM, the 9-11 mastermind be tried in military court and after convicted to be executed, I am all for that.
But burning books accomplishes nothing, just shows we are afraid — the communist Chinese burned books.
Good...I’ll bring the matches AND a sidearm...
Let em freak and riot...time to rip the mask off ....
“burning books accomplishes nothing, just shows we are afraid — “
It seems to me that the opposite is true, that NOT burning the koran shows that we are afraid. Burning their vile text definitely sends a message, and it’s not one of fear, it’s one of defiance. It may be only symbolic, but it’s better than nothing.
Sure, it takes real bravery, to burn an inanimate object, a book...
As I said, there are thousands of productive ideas out there, this is just plain dumb.
Hold a Bible class, demand that the US show resolve in fighting Islamic terrorism, protest against the planned Mosque at Ground Zero....
