Michelle may have had her fill of his narcissistic coldness, but she clearly loves the limelight. She also has to know quite clearly that were she to cross him, she would become the target of his wrath — his rage alone is likely very frightening. She’s watched him tear apart other people in the public eye and he knows her secrets.
There’s no escaping a narcissist unless you’re willing to give up every type of power or reputation that person can touch. I don’t think Michelle is willing to do that.
HOWEVER, because narcissists don’t really care to have people around unless they’re providing what the narcissist wants (narcissistic supply), living “separately” from, yet still in the same residence as, them *is* possible. Taking lots of trips with the girls, justified on diplomatic or educational/opportunity grounds even, is more likely I would think. It removes a large portion of the most obvious and problematic difficulties.
