Okay since you seem to have some idea of the military and military history what say you to this: if the draft was brought back it would be a dis-service to the country, not just for the other reasons I mentioned like coercion and too many young idiots joining, but also the fact that the anti-war movement which always sets back our victories in wartime would just grow stronger. I mean that's what killed us in Vietnam. Now a days esp. since N0bama was elected you only see 1000 ppl tops at an anti-war demostration. If everyone believed their kid was going to be drafted you'd be seeing an entire city out there protesting and dissing the troops. Then they'd also have a real excuse since they could say (as many did during Vietnam) most of these young ppl are being forced to serve and probly die. They didnt choose to serve. That way of thinking will make most Americans even more opposed to military action necessary for our national security. What do you think?
My main point was that a lot of kids would benefit from a couple of years of structured discipline before going on to college or starting a career. Would a program like this be complicated? Yes! Would it be vulnerable to political abuse turning it into a "green corps" or some other powder-puff parade? Yes it would be vulnerable! But, I stand by the idea that a well-intentioned and strictly run service corps could be beneficial to young people and help communities. I stand by the proposition that failure to participate or failure to cooperate would result in a loss of future benefits from the taxpayers.
Today, we see too many kids who graduate and have no goals in life, other than downloading the next app on their smart phone or, even worse, stealing a smart phone because no one bothered to give them one. My idea was intended to address this issue. Give the kids some direction. You say that it is the parents job to do this and I agree. But, the fact is, many aren't doing it and never will.
