Ezra Taft Benson-Warning

In conclusion let us summarize this grand key, these “Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet”, for our salvation depends on them.

1. The prophet is the only man who speaks for the Lord in everything.
2. The living prophet is more vital to us than the standard works.
3. The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet.
4. The prophet will never lead the church astray.
5. The prophet is not required to have any particular earthly training or credentials to speak on any subject or act on any matter at any time.
6. The prophet does not have to say “Thus Saith the Lord,” to give us scripture.
7. The prophet tells us what we need to know, not always what we want to know.
8. The prophet is not limited by men’s reasoning.
9. The prophet can receive revelation on any matter, temporal or spiritual.
10. The prophet may advise on civic matters.
11. The two groups who have the greatest difficulty in following the prophet are the proud who are learned and the proud who are rich.
12. The prophet will not necessarily be popular with the world or the worldly.
13. The prophet and his counselors make up the First Presidency—the highest quorum in the Church.
14. The prophet and the presidency—the living prophet and the First Presidency—follow them and be blessed—reject them and suffer.

I testify that these fourteen fundamentals in following the living prophet are true. If we want to know how well we stand with the Lord then let us ask ourselves how well we stand with His mortal captain—how close do our lives harmonize with the Lord’s anointed—the living Prophet—President of the Church, and with the Quorum of the First Presidency.

Ezra Taft Benson

(Address given Tuesday, February 26, 1980 at Brigham Young University)

She said she would not marry him without a church, because she would not raise kids without a Christian faith. they then tried out several denominations (Beck himself was raised Catholic) until they decided upon Mormonism partially because he had a longtime manager who had been trying to get Glenn to become a Mormon for 15 years prior, and also because his special needs daughter really loved the people at the Mormon "Temple" in CT.

Except the fact that there are NO MORMON temples in CT.

To some, the Bible seems to make a compelling argument as to the “fiction” of the Trinity.

Here is MORMONism's own creed:

Articles of Faith

The Articles of Faith outline 13 basic points of belief of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The Prophet Joseph Smith first wrote them in a letter to John Wentworth, a newspaper editor,
in response to Mr. Wentworth's request to know what members of the Church believed.
They were subsequently published in Church periodicals.
They are now regarded as scripture and included in the Pearl of Great Price.

THE ARTICLES OF FAITH
OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
History of the Church, Vol. 4, pp. 535—541

  1. We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
  2. We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression.
  3. We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
  4. We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
  5. We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.
  6. We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.
  7. We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.
  8. We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
  9. We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.
  10. We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.
  11. We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
  12. We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
  13. We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

Joseph Smith

To some, the phrases "...and so forth." mean that almost anything can be shoveled into the 'faith' of MORMONism.

... doctrinally, the Trinity was the point at which Christianity broke definitively with its parent faith, Judaism, and other forms of monotheism.

...and so forth.

Maybe with effort it'll pique your spelling abilities.

Not true, I’m trying to point out the difference between scripture and inspiration. It’s not the same thing, and YOU know it. Otherwise, why do you believe in a closed canon? God has been inspiring men for 2000 years, right?

The explanation by Elder Oaks makes that clear, but apparently you didn’t read it.

And no, the quote you attributed to Joseph Smith was NOT from the Doctrine and Covenants. You should check your sources.

Let me ask this another way.

Do you believe that Columbus was inspired and led by God to come to the Americas? I’m really interesting in your opinion on this. You know that we do. In fact, our Book of Mormon makes that clear that he was “wrought upon by the Holy Ghost”. This one is part of our scripture.

I do not at all like Beck’s Evangelical preaching but I still listen to him almost every day. The Evangelical stuff bothers me greatly and detracts from everything he is presenting. The results of the research he is presenting is 100% spot on!
I agree with you 100%.

The Mormon crap is crap... but then so is the Mormon-bashing crap that is so prevalent here in FR. I'm sick of both of them.

We have to survive the takeover of our nation by that communists in the WH and we're not going to do that if we waste our time arguing over religious differences amongst ourselves.

And I really hate it when people say "salvation is more important than patriotism" (or however they say it).

Is that what we said during WWII?

F No!

We fought TOGETHER, dammit, and worried about our differences AFTER THE VICTORY.

As you know Elsie, I rarely post to you for reasons expressed previously. But I did want to thank you for posting the Articles of Faith.

Quite a stark contrast between the very comprehensible Articles of Faith, & the Creeds which may not be so much so. Funny how the Nicene Creed has hung around when a majority of the leaders of the church around the time didn’t even believe in it. Given the argument laid out on my home page, is there any wonder why?

The Articles of Faith on the other hand seems like pretty good stuff to believers & non-believers alike. The non-believer may question parts of it, but for the most part, it’s just about being a good Christian. Again, thanks for the posting.

This is waht the D and C says.

D&C 98: 5-6 5 And that law of the land which is constitutional, supporting that principle of freedom in maintaining rights and privileges, belongs to all mankind, and is justifiable before me.

6 Therefore, I, the Lord, justify you, and your brethren of my church, in befriending that law which is the constitutional law of the land;

D&C 101: 77, 80

77 According to the laws and constitution of the people, which I have suffered to be established, and should be maintained for the rights and protection of all flesh, according to just and holy principles;

• • • 80 And for this purpose have I established the Constitution of this land, by the hands of wise men whom I raised up unto this very purpose, and redeemed the land by the shedding of blood.

I don't know if he said Temple. I am not Mormon, so I don't get the organization. But it was some place in New Haven (his wife is from nearby Hamden CT)

I am so tired of these religious pissing matches about Glenn. Enough already.

Friggin' dittos to that.

Beck is a treasure and a watchman, not an infallible demi-god. I don't have cable so I've never seen his Fox show, but I listen to him probably 80% of time on radio, and the guy rocks. I've never heard him say anything remotely Mormon, which leads me to believe that, based on what I've heard, if he isn't fully saved by grace, he thinks he is.

And the evil bastards in this Regime that he's shaken out of their commie tree are legendary.

I detect a bit of jealousy from these "professional preachers", and more than a little judgmental envy from his critics.

He does, however, make some awful mistakes. Swallowing the Obama birth certificate legends whole, for example. But he's a good man, a great patriot, and a very groovy introduction to applied theology who may think "Christian" means going to a church building and moaning endlessly about what other people are doing to themselves that isn't harming anyone else.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

Elsie - Thank you for posting that. It is amazing and literally defines cult, doesn’t it.

Basically it gives the latest prophet carte blanche to do whatever they want, teach whatever they want.

” I’ve never heard him say anything remotely Mormon”

Then either you don’t know anything about Mormonism, or you are a Mormon like Beck who doesn’t even recognize half the stuff he puts out is contrary to sound Christian Doctrine.

The original posts, and the other recent links to Beck have shown Beck repeatedly putting forth Mormon doctrine. Now if he is not ashamed of it, why are you denying it?

same here........ I never hear Beck trying to talk people into becoming a Mormon, I do here him trying to educate people, but too many here expect every human to think in lockstep with their beliefs and since Beck is not in their religious mode spam every thread to dis him and anyone who likes him.
