A USA Today piece by Mary Beth Marklein recently noted that a new category of campus protest is making the rounds of schools these days, according to Donald Downs in mindingthecampus.com.
Apparently “a new generation of law students and graduates is rising in protest over the failure of law schools to give them honest accountings of the job market and their professional prospects.”
Marklein wrote: “Law schools, once viewed as a guaranteed path to a high-paying career, are coming under fire as disillusioned graduates find a tighter job market than they say they were led to expect . . . A small but crowing coalition of graduates, on blogs with names like ‘Scammed Hard’ and ‘Shilling Me Softly,’ blame their alma maters for luring them into expensive programs by overstating their employment prospects.”

They need to graduate, pass the bar and then sue the schools!

Law Deans keeps saying there is always room for good lawyers.
so they expand their classes.

IMHO..what’s going on in general at the College/University level concerning student loans.....has the same Federal fingerprints of the clowns that foisted the housing scam onto the back of the taxpayer.
There is no way an 18yr hold has informed consent of the financial consequences of their signing loan papers for college, or for graduate school. Each institution should be required to provide documentation of the financial prospects of purchasing their education to EVERY student signing loan papers.
Perhaps they are in this predicament because they do not have a MATH requirement.
My son was talking about being a dr or a lawyer.
I sat him down with the phone book.
Page after page of dr. Page after page of lawyer. Pages of real estate agents. It was the same for plumbers and A/C repair.

Welder and accountant was better, but still a bit glutted. I told him to forget about stereotypical fields such as dr, lawyer, accountant, etc. Use his imagination. Ask himself where things come from, then look at what it takes to produce that item. Then see what it takes to get into that field and ask himself if he could/would do that.
He’s decided to go for a BS in Geology with a secondary degree in Mechanical Engineering and to get into oil. (he wants to travel.)
Kids don’t seem to have any imagination when it comes to career choices. I remember being asked for my major when I was 18 and feeling frustrated. I didn’t have enough experience to even know what was out there and I knew it!
I have a hard time feeling sorry for these “kids”. It takes about eight years to get through college to become a lawyer. We’re not talking about naive 18 year-olds. We’re talking about 23, 25, 26 year-olds. Are they telling me that these bright, young adults couldn’t take one hour out of eight years to look into the job prospectus of their chosen profession on their own?? And now they want to blame the university for the lack of opportunity?
Protected - as in there are laws made by lawyers for the benefit of lawyers. Only peopled who have been to lawyer training schools can become lawyers - what do you think the “bar” is all about? It used to be you went to school and “read the law” now lawyers are there to teach you the most current “theory” behind the newest laws (million dollar awards for spilling hot coffee on yourself while driving a car).
Best possible job - a lawyer has an air conditioned office where people come to him and pay him to wander through the books looking for a prior case which supports their claim. Not hot sun (except for vacations) and no hard work lifting heavy objects, overtime is the exception and then it is well paid.
Am I down on lawyers - you betcha. Why? Because they, as a group, are unwilling to police themselves. It has been this way for decades. See Godfather I for proof of this.
They don’t even have to get out the books, just use the internet.
You should publish something on that phone book concept. All those career choice tests and such would have no competition.
Really glad about the geology choice. Those little hammers are cool. All those grid measurements. And, there is nothing cooler that being smart, educated and able to get in mud and pound on stuff.
I’m impressed!
