The Catholic Church has a BIG problem with philosophical materialism, including the "Nothing made Everything" and the "Man is Nothing Special" absurdities, which deny the creative power of God and the spiritual dimension of Man.

What we don't have a problem with is secondary causes, which are uncovered by physical clues, not textual exegesis. This does not necessarily mean "Darwinism" (or "Stephen J. Gouldism" or "Francis Crickism" or any number of permutations), but a sincere openness to follow the evidence of chains of causality wherever it leads, even to the Divine Logos whose Law permeates all material order. (Note to Mr. Hawking: that would include the Law of Gravity.)

Actually, Pope Benedict has done some good thinking on the subject. You might want to look into that (Link).

Just what is Darwinism anyway?

It's an explanation for how God created life, if you believe God created everything.

Shouldn’t it be made clear that evolution does NOT explain the origins of life, and there is NO scientific explanation for what created life.

This is very badly written. I got a third to half way through before trying to follow the disjointed, to non-existent, train of argument became too painful. My embarrassment for the author was equally painful.

When you finally get to the thesis suggested by the title -- that "Darwinism" supposedly has something to do with "Gnosticism" -- incoherency melds with sheer stupidity. The cited authority thinks Darwinism has to do not only with "living things creat[ing] themselves," but even with the "origin of being" itself! In fact darwinian evolution isn't even concerned with the origin of life (let alone "being") but merely how living things change over time.

Even though all antievolution arguments are (IMHO) ultimately flawed, because false, there are far better efforts. Don't waste your time with this mess.

Your “critical analysis” is as profound, weighty, and interesting as a blank sheet of paper. But then, resentment, fear, and conceit masquerading as reason always is uninteresting.

You said: Even though all antievolution arguments are (IMHO) ultimately flawed, because false, there are far better efforts. Don’t waste your time with this mess.

Spirited: Ah yes, you-—like Lewontin-have an a priori commitment to “just so” stories.

“Just what is Darwinism anyway?”

Fraud, wishful thinking. Imaginary constructions like Ardi.

"yeah but the Catholic church “has no problem” with it."

The Catholic Church has no problem with science describing or postulating HOW God accomplished creation, it is content with THAT He accomplished it.

The word people should be using is abiogenesis.
