In a perverse, way I think he almost takes glee in someone’s misfortunes, like the black woman looking for reassurance. It’s the small and petty that means more than we suspect. The grand gestures are too well rehearsed and scripted — the small things is where reality shows itself.

People didn’t know there was something wrong with a guy who waited until almost 2 months after his grandmother died, for his Chistmas vacation, to throw her ashes onto rocks beside the sea - wearing an aloha shirt and getting out of the car to do it beside a public highway pull off area?
And then there were all the visits (ZERO) he made to comfort his dying mother - whose ashes he also witnessed tossed onto the blowhole rocks - beside a public highway.
