Respect Life? Then Vote For It!

In a continuing tradition begun in 1972, the Roman Catholic Bishops of the United States have celebrated each October as Respect Life Month, commencing with a sermon on respect for human life, from conception to natural death, on the first Sunday of October.

So it was this Sunday, in Catholic parishes all over America, one of the rare times in which not only the liturgy but the sermon as well enjoy thematic unity across the country.

Now, this is a political site, not a theological one – and I’m a political writer, not a theologian – so don’t be afraid; this will not be a religious article. But it is a good day, as good a day as any, to think about the way that one’s moral preferences and commitments should play a role in their expectations of government. A gut reaction for many would be that the two should be identical, but in fact, they should only be complementary.

This is Respect Life Month, and churches will be giving lots of good recommendations to their congregations.

Good so far, but your priests and pastors may not be as good at advising you in the ballot box as they are at advising you elsewhere...

Our Associate Pastor gave a terrific sermon about respecting life at last evening’s Mass.
