(San Francisco) City Hall's latest target: mani-pedis
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | October 4, 2010

Talk at City Hall today was all about "the toxic trio" - and no, that wasn't in reference to your three least favorite supervisors. The dangerous three are toluene, dibutyl phthalate and formaldehyde, and they're lurking in most nail polishes. Several supervisors, led by Board President David Chiu, want San Franciscans getting mani-pedis to debate more than whether to go with "Lemonade Stand By Your Man" or "Iris I Was Thinner" (Yes, those are apparently both real nail polish names.)

Instead, they want them to consider patronizing nail salons recognized by the Department of the Environment for using polishes free of chemicals that cause health problems...The board's public safety committee today recommended that the full board approve legislation creating a Healthy Nail Salon Recognition Program in which the city's 200 salons could voluntarily choose to participate. Those using toxin-free polishes would likely get a decal to put in their window.

A string of nail salon workers...along with public health advocates testified about the dangers of salon work...

Connie Ng, a 51-year-old nail salon worker from Vietnam, said she went to a hospital several years ago with breathing problems... She now uses an inhaler for her asthma, which she believes she developed at the salon. She said she hopes the city's program will educate her co-workers because she hasn't gotten far in doing it herself. "They're focused on earning money," she said. "I'd like to see a lot of changes."

I do feel that these salons should be regulated better but I don’t think the feds should do it.
I have been in nail salons where the air is thick and almost unbreathable with fumes. While I tell myself ‘just five minutes more and I can get some air’ I look in wonderment at the employees who must sit in this miasma all day. They had propped the door open and floor fans pointing toward the door but it really didn’t come close to addressing air quality. Again I don’t think the feds should do it - I think the feds should be addressing much more important things.

It is a complete mystery to me why

1) anyone would paint their nails

2) why they would pay someone else to do it

So I guess I don’t care — except that those who can will drive out of town to get it done.

(Probably without paying for carbon credits.)

1) You must be a guy

2) Like dentistry, it is best left to the professionals

The government shouldn't try to micromanage every last detail of our lives.

My wife spent more hours in school to get a nail tech license than you have to spend to get a commercial pilot’s license.

The ones in the middle are Keith Olbermanns. The left is Matthews and the right is Ezra Kleins.

Woo Hoo, toluene. Couple gallons in the cars gas tank
and it’s guaranteed to shake the paint off those toe nails,
no matter how many you have.
