This is as good of a thread to ask as any: I need an outdoor work knife. It needs to be folding, worn on a belt, and of a size that won't get me hassled by the cops. (I live in Illinois).

Again, I need to work with it.

Get a Myerchin knife. I had several in the Navy. They can hold their edge for a very long time (if sharpened correctly).

For general purpose knife (one large blade), I’ve been happy with an Ozark Trail brand knife I got in the camping section of Wal-Mart.

I use mine constantly. It sharpens easily, is heavy (4” long closed, 7.5” open), has a locking blade and a serious beltclip bradded to the knife body. It has a smooth edge, not serrated, which works best for me.

Plus, its cheap...twelve bucks, so when I lose it, it’s no big deal.

Can’t remember if it was Sears or Home Depot that had a pretty good selection of knives for $20 or less. If there’s even a remote chance the police would hassle, I’d feel a lot better about just giving them a cheapo. My BIL works construction. I got him one of the S&W knives as a stocking stuffer...that was about 5 years ago...still going strong.

Knife laws in Illinois?

"If you are not carrying the knife specifically for work purposes, it could be considered illegal. It's a gray area."

Kershaw Leek. Great knife, easy to sharpen, holds an edge, lasts forever.
