After I retired from the U.S. Army Intelligence & Security Command in 1984, I did my final year at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida - The self styled “Harvard of the South,” which I found to be as far Left as the Harvard in Massachusetts.
I did have one moment of glory there - Abbie Hoffman came on campus to give a speech. I led the college ROTC in doing to Hoffman what he did so many times to conservative speakers at colleges and we totally disrupted his speech by waving large American flags to shouts of “USA! USA! USA!”
Hoffman gave up after about half an hour and departed Winter Park, forever. It was not long after that he committed suicide by drug overdose.
Of course, the Rollins Administration went absolutely ape since the event got covered by The Orlando Sentinel, a Leftist rag, that painted us mostly ROTC demonstrators as “Right wing nut jobs” etc. The usual Leftist nonsense. As the de facto leader I was told to see one of the Deans, which I did...and I chewed his Leftist butt out in my best Army NCOese and double dog dared him to take any action against me or the Rollins cadet corps for our defense of the Republic.
The bottom line: the Rollins Administration backed down.
Glad to hear it. Another fun experience...I was walking across campus (I taught at a Big 10 school) and there were about four students with a big sign stating: Down With Capitalism. There were about 30 students listening to these four intellectually vomit the usual socialist BS. Anyway, I asked them: What are you going to replace Capitalism with? Their answer: Socialism! I asked: Which type...Marxist, Lenin, Trotsky, Mao? They looked at each other for a few seconds and said: The kind where everyone has as much as everyone else. I said: Oh, pure Communism. Please name one society that tried pure Communism that lasted more than a decade. No answer.
The good news: The rest of the crowd clearly understood that these four guys didn't have a clue what they were talking about and the crowd dispersed despite the continued chanting from the Stupid Four.
It was a fun day.
