I speak from my experience with scientific publishing.
Maybe humanities journals are different, but a number of scientific journals charge page charges. In addition, there is a fee for color pictures, even if there aren’t page charges.
My whole point, however, was to point out that while it may cost authors to publish in journals, they are not profiting (at least directly) from it. That was in response to the person who commented (because of the article charge) that “Guys like this are going to milk the hoax for every dime they can steal from the taxpayer.”
