This Orwellian rewrite of history really gets me angry, especially since I have a lot of Republican abolitionists from the 1860s onward in my family tree. The absolute worst example is how historians, Hollywood and the media portray the “Radical” Republican Congress of the 1860s, and its leaders like Thaddeus Stevens. Republicans were the model of tolerance and integration. They were way ahead of the population in terms of integrating government and society. Stevens fought for integration his whole life and was buried in a mixed cemetery. And yet they are portrayed by Hollywood as a bunch of dangerous zealots and tools of business. Its disgusting.

Don't forget also about William Jennings Bryan. He was a big time social reformer and a Christian fundamentalist. But he is portrayed as a fanatical bigot.

This... As opposed to Clarence Darrow, who was a eugenics Nazi, a white supremacist and and atheist. He defended Darwin's theory of evolution not because he wanted to promote intellectual liberty but to use it as a tool to prop up racial despotism and destroy it along with millions of innocent people. Instead liberals praise him as a rational scholar.

George Orwell: Don't say I didn't warn you...
