Here is video of the USS George Washington getting under way and heading to waters off South Korea as part of the U.S. response to North Korea’s artillery attack on South Korea’s Yeonpyeong Island yesterday. The attack killed two South Korean Marines and at least two civilians as well. Dozens more were injured in the unprovoked attack.

President Obama has condemned the attack, and ordered the USS George Washington to head to region where it will join more than 28,000 U.S. Troops stationed in South Korea. The USS George Washington leads a carrier strike group that will take part in naval exercises with South Korea in the Yellow Sea next week.

Completely unrelated, but if you’ve ever had the pleasure of serving aboard ship that was entering or exiting a Japanese port, you will appreciate how unbelievably clean Japanese tugs are. They are spotless. It’s like they’ve all just rolled off the the showroom floor.

Trying to wrap my mind around how an aircraft carrier would join up with ground troops.....

"Heard that almost the whole country of Japan is spotless."

It is. I have been to every continent except Antarctica. Japan is EASILY the cleanest country I have ever visited. It's like a collective case of OCD.

That's what happens when you let committees design your aircraft carrier...

So, it was going there anyway? This does not seem related to the attacks...

SONOBUOY PING!

Click on pic for past Navair pings.

Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.

Question: The is a plane spotted on the deck, near the fantail, as the GW leaves port. Any reason why?

It might have been left so there would be an airplane to show to visitors or because of maintenance issues during the fly off. They parked it on the roof to clear the hanger bay for inspections and ceremonies. IIRC they will be testing the cats, so they didn't want it forward, but they will be moving it there before the fly on begins in a few hours.

The Midway was where the GW was a number of times over thirty years ago. That includes the time we pulled unexpectedly for Operation Paul Bunyan. I had been in aviation fire fighting school at Yokosuka when we got the word we were pulling out. They had us march (?) back to the ship because they couldn't arrange immediate transport and if we had walked back in dribs and drabs the base Shore Patrol would have picked us up for being out of uniform. Flight deck greens were not an authorized uniform.

Sorry about that. Seeing that pier kind of took me back.
