I didn’t/don’t like Gary Cooper as an actor...but he is the lead in many of my favorite movies, The Fountainhead, Sargent York and High Noon.

E. G. Robinson and Lloyd Bridges. Two actors duped into brief commie memberships.

Unclear why FloppingAces went after Gary Cooper.

He was a Republican and suffered for his affairs and told A E Hotchner to tell Hemingway on his deathbed that he had found Christ and wanted Hemingway to find Him too. (Ernest evidently could not hear him, he was a pinko sympathizer and shot his own head off a few months after Cooper died.)

Coop was anything but a pinko. He was not fascinated with it, either.

They think it will never impact them.

Perhaps they could learn from Maxim Gorky, but I doubt it.

Cooper was right. That’s exactly why these celebrities are all so gung-ho for the likes of Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro. Their impression is that artistes like themselves would be given a position of honor and will be allowed to keep the mansions, the maids, the private jets, etc. while everyone else lives like a maggot. Now I imagine that many of these celebrities use socialism, communism, and other forms of radicalism as a way to be fashionable and there’s not much more thought put into it. But whether they are just using these ideologies as a chic accessory or whether they are true believers, they still believe they are entitled to the fame, wealth, and all of the trappings of being a star.

These morons don’t realize the reason why popular culture even exists today: greater disposable income and more leisure time for the average American. Without disposable income or leisure time, there’s no Hollywood. Oh sure, these people think they can float on an international market or think that they’ll just make movies off of government subsidies like they do in Europe, but they’re going to be very disappointed in their paydays if that were the case. And that’s not even considering the possibility of government control over content.

Gary Cooper saw it for what it was...a come-on to get rich actors to support the end of capitalism.

Simple answer: they’re too stupid to grasp how stupid they really are.

I liked Gary Cooper movies, but his monotone delivery of lines, and seeming lack of emotion drives me nuts. How he won a Best Actor Oscar is beyond me. Kind of like 0bama winning a Nobel prize.

Robinson said in 1948 “I was duped”. That was about the time he played Johnny Rocco in Key Largo. One of his lines was “They wanted to throw me, Johnny Rocco out of thew country like was was some stinking Red”. At least E.G. found his way. I wasn’t sure about Lloyd. Thanks.

I’m surprised there was not even passing mention for Cooper’s role in Hemingway’s For Whom The Bell Tolls.

In that case, and later a Hemingway daughter admitted that the book was written expressly with Cooper in mind, his character was supporting the Spanish “Republican” (communist) forces. The Republicans had the support of the Internationale, as well as Russian Soviet volunteers who were sent there to fight. Americans who went there to fight for the Republicans were for the most part integrated into the “Abraham Lincoln Brigade”, which would have made Lincoln wince.

And while the nationalists were indeed Fascists, and supported by the Nazis, who even provided the “Blue Division” to back them up, those who supported the Republicans were usually “fellow travelers.”

That is, Cooper’s character, though not portrayed as such, would likely have been an American communist.

Lloyd Bridges. I am so disappointed with him. He actually said “I wish there was a global government so there would be no problems with war”. His “global goverment” would have taken his millions, and his house, maybe even his kids, to make things “fair” for the global poor.

It’s not just actors and artists who are liberals. The majority of individuals in other creative disciplines also lean to the left. That’s certainly true in the ad business, where I work. It frustrates and saddens me how people who are otherwise very bright and caring turn into raving idiots when it comes to discussing politics.

Why do creatives embrace liberalism? I think it’s because to be considered creative you have to stand out against conventional thinking. Being right or wrong doesn’t matter; being different is what counts.

I don’t think it’s accurate to say that many in Hollywood have a love affair with socialism. Rather, they have a hatred of mainstream America, and embrace those who would challenge or degrade it - first the Soviet Union, and then Castro and Chavez.

If they really believed in Communism and socialism then they wouldn’t mind being paid on a scale of how much they help people and how dangerous their job is.
Why should celebs make more than fire fighters or teachers?

They certainly don’t put their lives on the line to save lives or educate children.
What they do is on little consequence if you look at the bigger picture.

I think they should be willing to turn all but about 50,000 a year over to the government so that we can afford to give soldiers and public servants a raise and help the poor find affordable housing so they don’t need to live in the streets.

Trouble is they want you and I to give most of what we make to the government while they keep most all they make. They are narrsistic elitists that believe they are above the law.
