If something required that kind of magnification to see, how did Da Vinci even put them there? Could he see what he was writing? What paint brush did he have back then, that could write that small?

Maybe he was such a brilliant mind, he invented a time machine and transported to the future - acquired a gadget - and then zipped back and stuck it in there?
Maybe on one of his trips to the future he read The DaVinci Code, and now he’s played a practical joke on all of us?

Hidden in the dark paint of her pupils are tiny letters and numbers, placed there by the artist Leonardo da Vinci and revealed only now thanks to high-magnification techniques. The fine print say's to head to China before 2012 and get a job working on one of the arks so you can sneak aboard when the time comes.

People from my home world have been visiting this planet since before any “as yet found” human history (though there is still some juicy stuff you will find if you folks ever get off your duffs and start exploring the ocean floor). Da Vincy was one that exposed a little more of our technology than we were comfortable with.
I’ll confess that he got this one past us. We had pretty much put it to bed. We thought.

Sort along the lines I was thinking. Will be interesting to see how long this story stands under scrutiny.

Many years ago, I remember doing the same thing....magnifying something...the result was not a picture but numbers. I finally realized that simple graining structure and/or blurring causes paaterns which will result in numbers because 'THAT IS WHAT WE WANT TO SEE"
In other words, a pre-conception led to an invalid "conceived" find...

If something required that kind of magnification to see, how did Da Vinci even put them there? Could he see what he was writing? What paint brush did he have back then, that could write that small? The magnifying glass was invented a couple hundred years before Da Vinci's birth. Painting with a single hair or bristle wouldn't have been too shocking either.

If it reads along the lines of “23/350,” then somebody got screwed.
