Richard C. Holbrooke, 69, passed away Monday after doctors conducted the surgery to repair a tear in an artery in his heart. Most recently he served as the Presidents point man in the highly volatile Afghan-Pakistani war zone. World leaders today mourn the death of a diplomat who led the end of the Bosnian war on the 15th anniversary of the peace deal he helped design.
Deal Maker Of Respect
In 1995 Mr Holbrooke seized the opportunity presented by the Bosnian/Croatian military prowess against the Serbs and the Nato decision after the Srebrenica massacre to finally intervene with air attacks. He demanded isolation from the participants at a remote base in Dayton, Ohio, and made them remain there until an agreement had been reached. The consensus among leaders is that agreement would have not been very likely without him. Deal Maker, Not Tea Drinker
After Barack Obama took office in 2008, Holbrooke accepted one of his hardest diplomatic assignments, the U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, the region the President sees as critical to the fight against terrorism. His forceful style worked in the Balkans, but it brought dangers for the diplomats in Afghanistan and Pakistan, where long periods of light talk and tea-drinking are the norm. He was open and honest with his assessments about the region. Officials in both countries saw him as abrasive, including the Afghan President Hamid Karzai. In April 2009, there were reports of a rather heated argument between Holbrooke and Karzai after Holbrooke alleged fraud in the Afghan presidential election.
Region On His Mind, Even On The Surgical Table
Holbrooke had the regions problems on his mind, even as he was being sedated for surgery, one senior administration official who stayed with the diplomat at the hospital told CNN. Almost with a bit of humor, the official claimed Holbrooke had a discussion with his Pakistani doctor at George Washington University Hospital that had absolutely nothing to do with his health condition. One of Holbrookes final comments, the official said was, Youve got to stop this war in Afghanistan.
I figured his last words would have been, “There is another Skywalker.”
"As Mr. Holbrooke was sedated for surgery, family members said, his final words were to his Pakistani surgeon: "You've got to stop this war in Afghanistan."
Was he having a conversation with Bill Casey?
I have a feeling he was too busy trying to breath, to say anything.
Brain blip, who was the Democrat that died in a plane crash?
The Dem’s used his funeral as a political stage.
Wash, rinse, repeat.
He was such a learned liberal and jihad enabler... he will be missed by his family, and the many jihadi’s he befriended.
Pardon me, I may be way off base here, I’m more than a little suspicious about these “last words”.
Did he mention the birth certificate? or Soros, the puppeteer?
Had Reagan said "Tear down this wall"...with no surrounding context, how would you interpret his words.
IT'S ALL ABOUT CONTEXT.
Maybe the LSM will interview Holbrook now that he has reached his final (warm) resting place about why he used lies about the Srebrenica massacre to justify bombing innocent Christian Yugoslavians. Another high point of this tools career was supporting N. Vietnam while our troops were fighting and dying in theatre.
I’ll go with: “You’re standing on my oxygen tube.”
You’re absolutely right. A million people have said the same thing a million times. “IT’S ALL ABOUT CONTEXT”
The only way to win the war in Afghanistan is to nation build.
This must start at the bottom up or the top down whichever is quicker.
Getting rid of a corrupt appeaser like Karzai is the first step.
Hold new elections etc.
“Rosebud!”
Democrat that died in a plane crash?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Ron Brown? some have alleged it was an assassination.
Maybe Wellstone in Minnesota.
They really pulled out the stops for that one, in fact think they even went so far as to tell the sitting Prez not to send a delegation....
No mention of God during his Life or in his Death.
No mention of finding God on his death-bed
It sounds like his eternity is going to be a fearful and terrible thing.
LOL, just beat me!
when recorded and played backwards, it sounds like he’s saying “there’s a Kenyan in the White House”
