One: your thesis is correct. Homosexuality is explicitly defined as abhorrent before G-D and it is wrong for religious Jews to support it. But, it is just as wrong for Christians to support it. I think that many people of all faiths have personal beliefs which may contradict with what they say publicly.
Two: the yom kippur war was specifically launched on the holiest day of year for Jews. This was done for the very reason you brought up. The muslims thought the Jews wouldn’t fight. However, doctors, military service, basically any emergency situation is exempted from Sabbath and Holiday prohibitions.
