Dubai World Down the Drain

by Tammy

January 22, 2011

I just read a great article over at Hillbuzz.

Apparently Dubai World, a man-made metropolis of islands in the Gulf of Oman, is SINKING. You may have caught the 60 Minutes interview with the King of Dubai as he explained this insane construction project. A project that was being built at the hands of slaves.

Yes, slavery survives and thrives in the Middle East. Anyone who thinks these Islamic jerks have one iota of civility in their blood is sadly mistaken.

And now these islands, built on slave blood are melting away. Karma is a bitch, isn’t it?

Go read more about it here. Kevin writes another brilliant piece about the evils of islam.

A Brit engineer who worked in Dubai told me that in ten years most of the buildings will crumble. Seems that the incredibly wealthy bought the cheapest concrete available.

They built their world on sinking sand... sounds like an old hymn to me.

I sure wouldn’t want to be in one of the tall buildings anytime in the next 30 years.

Wonder where the water comes from to water the lawn and trees? And the power... all underwater lines I suppose.

Dust storms here are unbelievable and the city will be covered in an increasingly thick film of dirt as time goes by.

Dumb place to think you can build a city or civilization...

I recall reading somewhere that one of the great perennial problems facing engineers in that part of the world is that most of the sand of the Arabian Peninsula is unsuitable for use in concrete.

The great Mohammed Bin Laden (founder of the Bin Laden contracting dynasty) went to considerable extremes trucking sand vast distances for use in his works. Even building roads for one-time use. That’s why his stuff still stands.

“...in ten years most of the buildings will crumble.”

.
Did they use seawater in their concrete?

Are they SURE?

I’ma thinking it HAS to be the precipitously rising sea levels caused by global warming.

Maybe we should be buying what little oil they produce at $200-300 a barrel and force ANYONE who is going on vacation to head for Dubai!

ANYTHING TO SAVE DUBAI!!!

Of course. Everything bad that happens is his fault.

Years ago a bridge was built across Tampa Bay called the Courtney Campbell Causway connecting Tampa and Satint Pete.
Contractor used salt water to mix the concrete which saved him millions but shortened the bridges lifespan by over half.
Course the contractor filed for bankruptsy a year or so later and was absolved of the whole mess.
Where did they get their water in DUBAI?

Too bad Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie backed out of their purchase of one of those islands.

I’ma thinking it HAS to be the precipitously rising sea levels caused by global warming.

This actually was tossed in to a headline in one of the UK papers, that global warming is at fault for the erosion of part of 'the World' project in Dubai, but not mentioned anywhere in the actual meat of the article, nor is anyone quoted as saying it has to do with global warming.

Just bonus faux facts tossed into an article to continue the global warming myths.

All this being said, I remember watching a lot of programs on the developments of the Palm Isles and the World project, and it was made pretty clear in the program that replenishing sand would be needed to maintain the islands, as well as extended dredging to clear the channels.

More of a true issue is the number of Dubai projects which are falling apart due to poor construction and inspection practices, not to mention using slave labor to build them. That's going to be the more significant impact on Dubai's land values.

Anyone wanna try living in the shadow of the 'world's tallest building' when two story buildings made by the same construction company are crumbling 8 years after being built?
