Did you see the interview (on FOX I think) with Peter Robinson, Reagan’s speeechwriter? He said while he was writing the speech, he talked to some Berliners to get their opinions about the Wall. One woman told him tear it down. Reagan liked the line so much, he added “Gorbechev, tear down this wall.” During reviews by other departments, the line got dropped because it was deemed “too controversial.” But on the way to giving the speech, Reagan told Robinson words to this effect: the boys aren’t going to like this, but I’m putting it back in.
