Sarah Palin recently said something that threw my whole world into disarray. It was as though everything I every believed in was suddenly turned upside down. She said something ... I agree with. Something I applaud!
What was this great proclamation of hers? She eats organic meat. And, the only difference between her organic meat and mine is that she has to shoot hers.
Her organic meat doesn’t come tidily wrapped in a Styrofoam tray, it comes wrapped in fur.
And you know what? That’s the way it should be!
I’m not saying that you should buy your chickens complete with feathers and feet. And the thought of your pork chops arriving with pig skin still attached is a little hard to take.
If we all lived the way Palin claims to, our only sources of meat would be that which we killed ourselves. We’d have to take the rifle and gear and head up into the woods for a day or two, where we’d lie in wait for the perfect shot.
But we’d also be a lot closer to the food we eat.
These days, our food is completely anonymous. We don’t know where our apples come from. We don’t grow our own carrots. It’s rare that we even shop at local farm stands. We never even see the hands that harvested our cucumbers.
We are even more removed from our meat. No one wants to eat meat with a face attached, and so we don’t. Instead we have someone, in some distant plant, butcher our meat down into barely recognizable portions. No fur, fins, feathers, or faces.
As a result, it’s a lot easier to just not care about where that meat comes from. I’m not just talking about the people working in the packing plants -- it’s about so much more than that. We never see a farm, never meet a cow. We never see how they live their lives. We never look them in the eye.
That leaves us with a lack of respect for the food that we eat. People who live like Palin -- who hunt for their food -- know very well the lives of their food source. They know where the deer drink, where the moose sleep. They are completely aware, when they pull that trigger, that they are taking a life. And this gives them a regard for that animal's sacrifice that most of the modern world will never experience.

She must have taken some common sense pills, or sum’thin’.

Meat isn’t artificial.

There are so many things we take for granted. And our cultural preset is to lambaste and mock those who don’t take our lifestyle for granted, while lauding cluelessness.
I am not in the "We", but it's interesting that she presumes everyone is.
The Blogger presumes.
Sarah just said she shoots her organic meat.

I was having a discussion with a friend of mine about this very subject. Too many people these days don’t realize that all “organic” really means is “contains carbon atoms.”
And my friend brought up that “natural” doesn’t automatically make something good for you either. After all, arsenic is natural; so is mercury!
Bloggers are smart. Someday I will be one too.
I’m tempted to go out and poach an organic steer. :-p
In her book, “America by Heart: Family, Faith, and Flag” she says she eats organic meat wrapped in fur instead of celophane!
I was at a colleague's 25th wedding anniversary party at her home. She said they were serving "pig" for dinner. I just assumed that meant pork.
Nope. The entire pig, roasted. Something Filipino or something.
We did that for our wedding- had a party the night before to dig the hole, start the fire (to heat up the rocks), and bury the pig. The next day we dug it up, got married, and had a blast! The only bad part was, the wife and I got very little of it- by the time we'd finished making the rounds at the reception, there was hardly anything left!
Man, was that fun! We had the most fun I've even seen anyone have at a wedding- pot luck reception, *requested* that everyone bring their kids (who also had a blast), and just no pressure at all for speeches or any of that. Followed by a very successful marriage, I might ad :)
I think the only thing I would do differently now is go out and shoot a wild pig, instead of buying one.
I remember getting together for a hog slaughter with my cousins. One shot to the head, string it up and cut it’s throat. We used every part for something. A huge kettle with boiling water for the skin (cracklins). Even the bones were used.
I’ll confess. I love my steak, but no, I really don’t want to hear about how the cow was killed.
I’m seeing a lot of this lately, and by this, I mean people pedantically arguing over definitions of words, often carrying on as though they’ve never heard a word with more than one definition in their entire lives.
So, I point you to Webster’s where amongst the multiple definitions of organic you’ll find: of, relating to, yielding, or involving the use of food produced with the use of feed or fertilizer of plant or animal origin without employment of chemically formulated fertilizers, growth stimulants, antibiotics, or pesticides
Noticed that. Perhaps this liberal gal sneaked a look at Palin’s book. Hope none of her friends sawit.
You need to stop using chemical fertilizers raising your beef!
