As one essayist wrote not long ago, it's become an article of faith in Conservative America that Hollywood is a “collection of hopeless la-la-land liberals — or worse, an elitist gaggle of heartland-bashing snobs.” Conservatives have routinely ridiculed Oscar movies for attacking the military (“Avatar”), promoting homosexuality (“Milk” and “Brokeback Mountain”) and depicting corporate executives as evil villains (“The Constant Gardener” and “Syriana”).
So it must've been quite a shock to watch all the la-la-liberals at the Oscars Sunday night honoring their elders and celebrating tradition on a show where the first clip of the night was from “Gone With the Wind” and the two guys who may have had the most screen time were Kirk Douglas and Bob Hope. Outside of a couple of lesbian jokes and one tiny barb directed at Wall Street from documentary filmmaker Charles Ferguson, the awards were drearily free of controversy, outrage or anything remotely resembling lefty sanctimony.
On the other hand, the Academy Awards were true to the spirit of this past year's movies. As this year's show demonstrated, Hollywood isn't so easily stereotyped. It may be a town full of liberals, but when it comes to its most prestigious awards show, the most exalted statuettes went to films that espouse conservative values. “The King's Speech,” which won four Oscars, including the climactic one for best picture, is a profoundly conservative film, paying tribute to King George VI, an aristocratic English monarch who, humbled by a humiliating stutter, develops a deep friendship with a commoner, his speech therapist.

The best supporting actress winner dropped the F-bomb during her speech.
They showed a picture of Obama during a musical montage.
Liberals were doing everything they could to get “The kids are alright” to win as many awards as possible. Even pushing Annette Benning for best actress.
La-La land is alive and well.

I was so interested in this years Oscar proceedings that I intentionally didn’t watch the show.
Things are getting pretty desperate when a king with a studdering problem doing his ‘duty’ is considered a great conservative movie.
I heard it was on. I could not care less about it.
We watched our DVD of “Return of the King.”
As the last election and this film show, there is a desire to turn and face the threat.
A generation born after the rhetoric which exhorted the nation to win knows what it has isn't it.
I just watched “The Fighter” a few nights ago. None of the females in that movie performed better than the girl in True Grit. (Steinfeild?)
What character did the winner play? The girlfriend or the mom? Those are the only two I remember.
It’s a shame Steinfield didn’t win for True Grit, she made the remake...

I don’t think the King’s Speech represents conservative values at all. It is just a very moving story of an individual’s struggle....and it just happened to a time, place and people which occurred before progressives with their moral ambiguousness and cultural decline had taken foot.
Silly to think of it in ‘conservative’ terms to describe....for sure.

The winner Melissa Leo played the mother in THE FIGHTER.
Melissa Leo played the mom. She should have won 2 years ago for Frozen River. I have enjoyed her acting ever since “Homidide: Life on the Streets”.
OTOH, I was really rooting for Hailee Steinfeld, but this was the toughest category with all 5 nominees giving excellent performances.

I think the Kings Speech was conservative in that it presented triumph over adversity. There were several good films this year (and some not so good that got nominated anyway).
Biggest dissapointments were Jennifer Lawerence not winning best actress for what was clearly the most electrifying performance I’ve seen for a newcomer and Restropo not winning best documentary (picked a Bush bashing anto corporate movie instead)!
The King’s Speech was a great movie. I’m glad it won. Not for a moment did I think of it as an example of conservative values.

There was no sex. There was no nudity. There was no violence, there was no foul language. There was a man who rose to his challenge. There was depiction of families as families. There was religion portrayed as a normal part of life, even by a king. War was portrayed as good.
That is to say, there was a complete absence of liberalism.
Therefore we at the LA Slimes must conclude:
An absence of liberal values must mean the movie was conservative

Not quite.
Don’t be fooled by this temporary right turn. Unholywood has NO conservative values. It isn’t even about them caving to financial pressures; despite declining attendance for years, they’ve continued to spew out liberal garbage season after season. This is a fluke, a caesura in their never-ending paean to socialism. They’ve stolen a bushel and given back a peck.
Don’t trust them.
