LOS ANGELES
COURTNEY McNAIR has been out of college for three years. She has a degree in political science and Spanish. She also has the same address she had in high school and the same bedroom in her parents Los Angeles home. Not to mention $40,000 in student loan debt, $2,000 in credit card bills and $10,000 left to pay on her red 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser.
And this is what she worries about: winning the lottery.
Ill just spend it all and have no idea where it went, said the 25-year-old graduate of Wellesley College.
That would be a luxurious problem. At the moment, shes taking out more loans for graduate school in an effort to pursue a career as a special education teacher.
So someday shell have a steady income. Her biggest problem, however, is getting a better grip on where her money goes. She doesnt know how to budget and hasnt put much thought into her financial future. Ive always hated money; Im scared of it, said Ms. McNair.
After she graduated in 2008, Ms. McNair took the first job she was offered, as a match coordinator at the Los Angeles Boys and Girls Club. It paid $25 an hour, but she didnt like working in an office. She switched to tutoring high school students, for $13 an hour, three hours a day. That was enough to, I guess, swing it for a while. Make my car payments, pay my phone bill and all that other stuff.
Now shes tutoring and working part time for a foundation started by her parents, who are both lawyers. The foundation provides low-cost legal services for students with special needs and eventually hopes to open a charter school.

What a winner.
She’s a dtiz. But her parents are rich. She’ll probably marry well, so its all good.
Courtney - sell the Cruiser and get a job as an interpreter if, that is, you really can speak Spanish.
Gals like her are a dime a dozen up in the Pac NW.
I bet she could get reliable transportation that didn’t require a car payment. Of course it wouldn’t be cool and hip. But it would be a good start. No one wants to start out with beginner things anymore.
What a brain dead 0bama voter loser. I smell a degree in affirmative action. What the hell is she doing with a pet if she can't support herself.
She went to an expensive, private school rather than a more affordable state school.
She went out and bought a car and used credit cards.
Welcome to the real world kid. Your behavior has consequences. I feel zero sympathy for you. Get off your ass and get a second and third job. Pay your debts. Quit crying.
For the record, you do not hate money. You hate not having more of it.

Of course if she were to become a teacher Union rules are LIFO - Last In First Out. Look at what happened to the Teacher of the Year in Wisconsin. Right after she got the award she was laid off because of seniority.
Then again, she’s a loser (turning down $25/hour for $13/hr. In 1971-2 I took 3 jobs I didn’t want until I got the one I wanted. Today kids are “taught” in school to think they will start at the top. To take anything else is beneath them.
I wonder if she will take a pass on the student loans???
I don’t understand the tone of this. Are we supposed to feel sorry for her? Isn’t Wellesley one of those “Seven Sister” elite colleges? Are we supposed to feel bad that she hasn’t yet become a good yuppie?
Are we supposed to sympathize that she’s going through her the “quarter life crisis”?
I guess I don’t understand what the story here is. Millions of college students graduate but have struggles after that. She has it better than most, from the sound of things. As long as she can tolerate Mom and Dad, and gets to live there, presumeably rent free, she will be on her feet eventually and be fine. Mom and Dad created a job for her. How many struggling young people have that luxury?
Holy Crap!!!
Assuming that was a 20 hour a week part time job, she would have pulled down $26,000 a year. If that was a full time job, she gave up a $52,000 job right out of College!
Maybe she should take a remedial math class instead of graduate classes.
You could make a song out of what you wrote.
“She’s a ditz
But her parents are rich
She’ll eventually get hitched
...So it’s all good.”
Well, she went to a lefty school and got a worthless degree in Poly Science. Hope she enjoyed her time away from home. I feel no sympathy for her or her parents.
Probably voted for (.)bama too.
The Political “Science” degree should help her make the trophy wall of some Democrat congresscritter.
The dog could easily be Mommy's and Daddy's. Why the hell is she thinking about going to grad school when she's unemployable (except by Mommy and Daddy) and already in debt up to her eyeballs?
where did she work I will go apply. I was laid off and can’t find work.
Well, I think she loves OPM.
Now shes tutoring and working part time for a foundation started by her parents, who are both lawyers. The foundation provides low-cost legal services for students with special needs and eventually hopes to open a charter school.
Kudos to the parents for helping others, but perhaps they abdicated their responsibility of teaching their child to manage money, while being worried about others.
She sounds like a trustafarian. Don’t worry, her parents will be there to take care of her....in fact, under Obamacare, she can still be under their healthcare plan - gee, life is grand!!
Very sad that a 24 yr old, college graduate has such a horrible work ethic.
I'd have killed for a $25/hr job, right out of college. Instead I worked slinging electronics for 6-something an hour.
