A Gurkha who single-handedly fought off an attack by at least a dozen Taliban insurgents has been awarded Britain's second highest medal for bravery.

Acting Sergeant Dipprasad Pun used up all of his ammunition and resorted to using his machine gun tripod to repel the attack in Afghanistan in September.

The Gurkha, 31, of Ashford, Kent, said he was a "lucky guy" and very proud to get the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross.

A total of 136 UK servicemen and women are being honoured, four posthumously.

Gurkhas should be on the bad guy’s ‘Do Not F*ck With’ list. The tallywhackers should be thankful he used his tripod on them instead of his kukhri knife.

LOVE the Gurkhas. Had the honor to serve them at a photo store I worked at in the UK. Some were based near where I lived.

Well this blows his chances to receive NATO's once-proposed "Courageous Restraint Medal."

What were Sgt. Pun's bracket picks?

Apparently beheading the enemy with a kukhri knife is frowned upon. Who knew?

As a Gurkha is disciplined for beheading a Taliban: Thank God they are on our side!

“The Kukri is the national as well as the religious weapon of the Gurkhas. It is incumbent on a Gurkha to carry it while awake and to place it under pillow when retiring.” - Maharaja Padma Shamser Jangbahadur Rana (Prime Minister and Supreme Commander)

Yeah, right up there with Hobbits with low blood sugar and Stephanie Abrams during that time of the month.

kukhri knife

Why don’t we bring a few Gurkhas to Texas and create an auxilary to the Texas Rangers. Might go a long long way toward solving some of our “border problems”....?

I think they might fit in very well with the majority of the population.

there was another article on FR, just recently, about a Gurkha who fought off an entire gang of bandits who were trying to rob the train he was on.

All he used was his knife. Genuinely tough guy.

My friend is a doctor and at the hospital where he works there is an Indian doctor who was vacationing in India when this occurred. He said that the local news was reporting that the Gurkha was taunting the Taliban as he killed them with his knife.
“Why isn’t Allah saving you?”
“Go and get your 72 virgins.?

Even if not true, I love it.

One of the Gurung security contractors working with us at a certain classified commo relay station that shall not be further named was fond of holding off on his latrine calls until the local muslims [outdoors, not our indoor cook staff, who were reasonably good folks] were proned out facing Mecca, one of 5 times daily. They eventually came to prefer having their prayer sessions outside the compound, which was his point, or avoid dropping by altogether.

When the U.S. State Department folks who were paying our bills found out about it, they went ballistic. Until I offered to pull the Gurkha security detatchment covering them and leave their immediate future to the DSS and Afghan national Army. My offer was considered by them to be a threat, whereupon I informed them that if they found the head of one of their staff on his desk the next morning, THAT would be my threat.

My contract was not renewed. And so we are losing in Afghanistan. And I have some new Amanda Shaw tapes to listen to, [which the Little Guys liked, BTW] so I'm happy.

Didn’t actress Joanna Lumley work to get the Gurkhas British citizenship? It was a controversial move to some of my English friends but after reading this story, wow!
