Every Driver’s Nightmare – Meeting Another Vehicle Coming At You On The Wrong Side Of The Road…
The Aged P.com ^ | the Aged P

In the UK we call them lorries, not trucks and, of course, we drive on the left, not on the right, but whichever country you live in it must be a terrifying moment when you are on a dual carriageway and suddenly come face to face with a vehicle driving in the wrong direction….

Had that happen on a motorcycle once. It wasn’t fun.

Well, it looks like Obama has totaled out an entire country instead of just a nice Honda.

I remember that thread. Her ex boyfriend was driving. She was shaving.

That was a classic thread. I may go look it up.

Only lady I have dealt with that I can recall was a few days ago. I was headed down the high way in a through lane. There was a exit coming up and toyota with a lady driving comes from the left lane (it was a 4 lane divided highway) across all 4 lanes to the exit only lane. Now I am on the shoulder, horn blowing getting the side of my truck beat to heck by the snow pile from the plow.. I get slowed down, and behind her and back in to my lane.

I don’t think the driver ever saw me, I know I never saw her under the berka.

When one of my children was 17 and going through, what was for them, a rebellious stage - nothing particularly serious, just feeling their oats and pushing back against the household rules and arguing about every one of those rules, they encountered a driver like this. I had prayed about the rebellion and asked the Lord to just get their attention.

Several things happened to this child, but the final thing was coming home from a class one night, they took the interstate. Along one stretch, there was construction, and although there were still two lanes in the westbound portion, there were concrete dividers right on the shoulder line. My child was in the left lane, with a transfer truck in the right, both doing about the same speed.

Up ahead, the child saw lights swerving around back and forth, and then coming straight toward them. No where to go.

The choices were, hit the transfer truck on the right, or the truck coming toward them. Suddenly the line of dividers ended, the transfer truck pulled over on the shoulder and my child was able to pull into the right lane just as the driver coming toward them blew past on the left.

When they came home on told us, we called the highway patrol and they said they had had several calls and I think, IIRC, that he did end up hitting an 18 wheeler, but survived. I don't think the truck driver was hurt.

I didn't have that kind of incident in mind but the child did soon afterward settle down and is one tough parent now :-)

Grandma is watching the evening news, waiting for Grandpa to get back from his evening bowling with his pals. She turns on the evening news and hears that there is a wrong way driver on I-495, the road Grandpa takes coming home. She immediately calls his cell.

“Karl, be real careful, there’s a wrong way driver on I-495!”

“Mary, I know, but’s not just one, there’s dozens of them!”

I remember that thread. Her ex boyfriend was driving. She was shaving.

It was her ex-husband. Talk about him being 1) A really good sport, or 2) Really wanting her to get on with her life.

You see all sorts of strange things in the Florida Keys. I saw a guy last week in Key West who had a full, luxurious head of hair and a great beard on one side of his head only.

I kid you not. The other side was shaved completely clean - and nicely tanned, too.

Was behind a ponytailed blonde soccer mom in a child-filled SUV one morning on a 45 MPH divided highway. You could see that she was continually looking down at whatever little Johnny in the front seat was doing because you could see the ponytail of her hair swinging back and forth.

I decided that it probably wasn't safe to be behind her and (what rapidly turned out to be wisely) decided to change lanes and get past her.

It wasn't 5 seconds later that I heard the heavy squeal of tires then 2 impacts in a row as she (apparently) looked up to see that traffic had stopped and locked 'em up.

She drove the car she hit into the one in front of it. I don't think anyone was seriously hurt (score one for big, massive SUV's) but it sure reinforced a lesson for me to do as little distracted driving as I can.

Greenville, South Carolina: Man and girlfreind on motorcycle, drunk, ride too close to the guardrail. The guardrail knocked the woman off the bike, her boyfriend was too drunk to notice. Not until he came to a stop sign and the bike fell over, did he learn the guardrail had taken off his leg.

We always take our caravan across to France each summer so it’s not just getting used to driving on the right but also in a UK car in France the driver is always nearside so overtaking needs extensive mirror work - and a passenger is also useful...

My driving nightmare happened a couple years ago. I was approaching a stop sign at a T intersection, started to brake, there was a weird clunk, and suddenly the brakes stopped working! In the 4 seconds I had in which to panic, I tried shifting, but remembered wrong and put it in P instead of R, which didn’t work. Tried the emergency brake but discovered that it wasn’t meant for people with short arms who have to sit really really close to the wheel, my knee would have had to come up through the wheel in order to get the right angle to push that pedal in a hurry. (I made a note of that for the next time I look for a vehicle.)

I would say I was lucky, but I don’t think it was luck. There was a gentle hill opposite the T, 2 pine trees with low interwoven branches, and no traffic. My truck jumped the curb, went between the two trunks, and was caught by the branches like it was a net. Didn’t even scratch the paint! After I got it back out, I couldn’t even see the tire tracks in the grass.
Turned out my brake line snapped. Even after it was repaired I had trouble driving it again for a few months, the thought of that clunking sound and the trees coming at me still makes me cringe.

This story really speaks to me because I have crashed my car every single time that I shaved my bikini area while driving. :(
