Pentagon Has Been ‘War Gaming’ for Economic Disaster Since Early ‘09

While we learned yesterday that the U.S. is preparing its domestic response to a potential economic collapse, the bigger story might be that the U.S. has been playing such “war games” for almost two years.

“The Pentagon sponsored a first-of-its-kind war game last month focused not on bullets and bombs — but on how hostile nations might seek to cripple the U.S. economy, a scenario made all the more real by the global financial crisis.” That’s how Politico reporter Eamon Javers (now with CNBC and who brought us Monday’s report) began an article dated April 9, 2009.

In that article, he describes how the U.S. first began preparing for an economic collapse. “Participants sat along a V-shaped set of desks beneath an enormous wall of video monitors displaying economic data,” he writes. “Their efforts were carefully observed and recorded by uniformed military officers and members of the U.S. intelligence community.”

The Office of the Secretary of Defense hosted the two-day event March 17 and 18, 2009, at the Warfare Analysis Laboratory in Laurel, MD.

The “game” didn’t end well for the United States: “the savviest economic warrior proved to be China.”

While it's good to see the Pentagon examine our vulnerabilities, I would have thought a lot of this would have been covered by Federal Reserve Economic models. They should discover a couple of things real fast.

• Energy is a key input of the economy and supplies of cheap plentiful energy is critical.
• Uncontrolled derivative products can be destabilizing.
• An enemy country can buy our manufacturing firms for 12xEBITDA, ship them overseas and realize not only EBITDA, but employment and taxes and postitive downstream economic effects that probably yield a payback in one to three years when the total economic picture is considered.

Thats nice they were ‘war gaming’ but thats just an academic exercise. How is that different than to rearrange the deck furniture? Are they going to declare martial law? OK, then what, take all our things and redistribute them? Then everyone will be equally poor exc for the thieves in govt? Its just not at all clear what the purpose of the gaming really is. I have this nagging feeling tho the Little People get the short straw.

The reason the gubmint is war gaming is because they know this train is too far down the tracks. Bernanke’s only job at this point is to drag the inevitiable out as long as possible. We are hoping they can hold off the crash for at least 12-18 more mos so we will have the retreat set up and stocked. There are a few hundred thousand people in this country that have a clue about whats going to happen and 300 million who will be shocked out of their minds.

The Pentagon has wargamed going up agains’t the general public and they lose hands down every time. Too much firepower.

When this thing collapes and it will there won’t be enough troops in this country to keep 3 major cities under control much less go out and try to take guns away from people who are totally crazed from fear and loathing. Bottom line is if you can be out of the city do it. Otherwise you are going to be in an untenable position. You will be lining up down at the baseball stadium for your chip and your ration card.

It's true and for good reason. I've been planning for economic disaster since before the evening of November 4, 2008.

The moment this dreadful fake's occupation of our White House became inevitable, I knew that economic disaster was just around the corner and the "worst case" economic forecast of 8% unemployment was far better than the reality we would see within months.

Money Magazine November 7, 2008 stated:

Economists predict that the current unemployment rate of 6.5%, already the highest since 1994, will max out at 7% or 8% by the end of 2009. The nation hasn't seen levels like those in nearly two decades.

I still remember reading this and laughing at the optimism that things would turn out so well, with forecasters oblivious to the effect of an impending sharp turn to the left in our country's course. Even if they made their predictions before that terrible election day, they had to know what was coming and how dismal the outlook would be in accordance with the dismal science. Since January 20, 2009, we've had an unbroken sequence of news stories about the "surprising" and "unexpected" bad economic news. I still laugh, but it's gallows humor now that I understand how much even I underestimated the economic destruction that Obama and Pelosi would inflict in two short years (I expected absurdly high deficits . . . close to a billion dollars a year!).

If anything, by the time 2012 rolls around, the economy will be picking up, the stockmarket will be up and the media will trumpet Obama as the savior of the economy.

All of those gloom and doom, head for the hills stuff is nonsense. Even if it were true, who’s the repo man or Sheriff that’s going to foreclose on us? There isn’t.

At worst, we’re in for a patch of nasty inflation, so buckle in, but after that, it’ll be smooth flying.
